I'm staying with Live....

Having posted about my disappointments in L7, I have decided that am going to stay on the Live train.

Ableton can thank Cycling 74 and their own previously good record for this as the potential for joint future developments between these two innovative companies probably outweighs the slightly underwhelming additions to Live this time around. Having read the posts relating to this, I also think they have become victims of their own success. Half the posts say they are trying to screw money out of users by releasing an annual update while other posts a few weeks ago were crying out for an L7 update at this time of year.

All in all, past experience has taught me it is less painful to stick with a product than it would be to sell it and have to rebuy it when they release "the big one".

Ahh ahh ahh ahh staying with Live staying with Live

I suppose I'm easy to please. I saw video export and the Spectrum device and I was all happy. I'm sure 7 will have me experimenting with side chaining and fun stuff like that.

When I was mastering my last album, I was kind of mad at myself for not using a spectrum analyzer throughout the recording process. Cool. I'll be glad to have it.

It's just not jammed with the innovation we expect from them but I think we can forgive Ableton for releasing a modest upgrade whilst they are working on the Cycling 74 collaboration (which is what I think has happened).

i think it would have been good of them to offer this update as a 6.5 for free, or for 60 dollars.
with the option to purchase the new instrument suite and other extras.
i really dont see so many new improvements in live 7 that make me think it is worth 120 dollars(at least on paper)

For free? That's a big ask. Maybe if they'd just added the drum racks, sidechaining and sorted out the midi timing. But rewriting the audio engine and the memory management for sample files must have been a major undertaking. Development work has to be payed for somehow, they are a business afterall.

..as for me, of course I will stay with live and upgrade to 7.... I just got a padkontrol so that drum rack is very well come... plus it helps exploding the beats in its solo instruments, a big time saver

i am a big fan of ableton, and as a long time user, i have probably paid close to 1000 dollars on the program with operator and all updates since version 3.
and i personally think they added not so much this time for another 120 for issues that could have been dealt wqith before such as time signatures and improved midi and audio handling.

I think we have to accept that this is an upgrade that will suit some more than others. It looks like if you don't need the few functional improvements it brings, wait for the next one.

Some people are just born to whinge !

I am definately staying with Live.

True!

I only got on to the Live bus at stop 6, but I think it's brilliant! The drum machine jobby looks wicked and I reckon that'll replace my Battery 3... (also, will go well with my Akai MD24.)

It's a great program, I've been using it for 6 months and it's really opened me up to a more musical and creative field in my music making... It's the kind of program that is wicked to go to from Reason. My production has jumped 250% from my Reason days.

I just wish, wish, wish that they'd slim down the CPU-age more. Make the whole program alot more streamlined and efficient with the way it handles plugins and general stuff like that. I've got an iMac dualcore 2Ghz with a 1.5Gb of RAM and the arrangement view is really sluggish to me. I can't handle too many plug ins either. I almost always max out on my tunes... I'd love Live 7 to be more efficient with how it handles things, to allow for more plug in goodness... Apart from that, I really can't fault it.
