Easiest way to do basic loop chopping + mapping in Live?

Post by glenc » Sun Oct 21, 2007 10:18 pm

Apologies if this is a total noob question, but I'm trying to do the simplest of things: remix my own work. I have parts bounced down out of Cubase and want to pull them into Live and auto-slice them into crotchets or quavers or whatever and map slices to ascending MIDI notes.

I tried using Kontakt's Beat Machine stuff but it appears to want to auto-detect slices which is terrible if your material doesn't have drums in it.

What is the easiest way to achieve this in Live?

- I would prefer to use one of Live's instruments so that drag n drop between the instrument and the Live views will work nicely.

- I don't currently own Sampler but am planning on buying it as part of the upgrade path when L7 comes out, or sooner if need be.

- Ideally, I'd like to chop the sample in the arrange view (so I get to take advantage of Live's warping) and then just drag the slices into wherever they need to go to be mapped to keys.

- This seems like something that might work great with Drum Racks, but I don't have access to them yet ... :(

you can!

highlight the part of the sample you want to use in arrange view (turn grid off if it helps). Click on the title bar of the sample and hold. Press tab to change back to session view while still holding the mouse button, and you should be able to drop that clip directly onto a simpler or impulse pad.

If you are in arrange view just place the cursor where you want to cut (slice) the track in it's track (not in the bottom of the screen) and hit Option+E. This will split the track. Do that is as many times as you need. Then you can copy, dupulicate, or drag those files wherever you want.

Thanks for the help guys. I was aware of the CTRL+E thing already :)

To investigate this, I enabled the demo mode for Sampler on my copy of Live 6, however dragging multiple clips onto the "drop sample here" area that I had split in the arrange page didn't seem to map them to ascending keys, and I couldn't see any way of dragging directly into the keymapping page of sampler. Copy and paste didn't work either.

Is there an easy way to drag multiple clips into Sampler and have it map them to a series of keys?

If you wait a couple months Live 7 will be out with it's slicer and that will do what you are looking for.

old school, using session view as your "sampler":

1 assign empty clip slots to keys on your keyboard.

2record a new clip.

3 Set it to quantization - none

4 decrease the clip length to the desired slice length

5 copy-drag it into one of the slots you already had assigned to a key

6 copy drag this clip into the next slot, adjust sample start as desired.

7 repeat 6 until you have all your slices in their respective slots.

Thanks Pepez ... yeah that was actually the first thing I tried. Unfortunately doing it that way means you sacrifice polyphony and also it means that those MIDI assignments are stolen for when you actually want to play an instrument with them.

Using Live 6, it seems like that approach is the best one, although hopefully Live 7 will be heaps better with the Slicer and Drum Racks.

Oh, it is. Very easy to map clips imo. I don't do much slicing, but with the ease of use of Live 7's slicer, I might do more of it.

Well you can have them on various channels, if you need polyphony. And regarding the midi-assignments: you can have them on a different midi-channel than the keyboard that you are using to play keys.
