Constant Disk Activity

Post by billy car » Fri Apr 16, 2004 3:24 pm

Still getting constant disk activity with 3.0.4 ...

Before, in 3.0.3, my external drive where my OS X is located, but on a different partition from my Applications partition, would pulsate with activity, if Live were open.

Now, the disk activity light is constant ... when I move the cursor over the folder names in the Folder window, disk activity stops and starts again, as I run from folder name to folder name ...

Problem with the installation? (not getting rid of buggy code, or "extensions")?

Comments?

Hmmmm
billy car, not sure if what you are reporting is the same phenomenon Ableton said they adressed with 3.04... for me the activity was constantly constant (pardon the phrase) ie sounded like the HD grinding away during bootup - it was not associated with moving the cursor anywhere - so you may have a different quirk on your hands.

You could possibly try the workaround that Alex Ableton posted in the first place regarding 3.03 [pasted below] - see if that makes a difference.

Ohter than that, **maybe** having the Live app and the OS on an external drive are causing the problem. Dont suppose you're able to move either app or system folder to your internal drive... could get messy - especially regarding Live's authorisation... probably best not to. Sorry to be vague. Hang in there and see if anyone else reports the same thing or email [email protected]. Herr Klein is very friendly and knowlegeable.

Hi folks,

this is definitely an issue with Live 3.0.3 mainly on Os 9 but also on Os X. We're working on a solution for this.

Meanwhile you can also use the "Options.txt" mechanism to fix this behavior.
So place a text file called "Options.txt" into the Preferences folder:
"...\Preferences\Ableton\Live 3.0.3\Options.txt".

Add the following Line there:
"-DontLogExceptions"

sorry for the inconvience,
regards,
Alex

Continues, continuously ...

Post by billy car » Sun Apr 18, 2004 3:19 pm

After Live 3.0.4 starts up, there is continous write activity to the drive where the Live app is located ... an external SCSI drive that also houses the OS X 10.2.8, but on a separate partition ... I am also monitoring that with the Freeware DiskSpy 1.3 ... of course my external drive also has a disk activity light on it, plus I can hear it whirring when Live runs ...

I tried the Options.txt thingy ... didn't help (if I did it correctly). Perhaps I will try getting rid of the other Preference folders for the previous versions of Live ... I have 5 or so of them around ...

I admit, this is a second copy of the Live app ... I have an in-house computer that I run tests on, and then a music studio computer that I use for rehearsals, and recording ...

I have an e-mail into Ableton ...

Needing a Solution ...

Post by billy car » Thu Apr 22, 2004 12:00 am

I need Live 3 to record my rehearsals for an upcoming recital, and don't feel I should use it with all that disk write activity going on ...

Any ideas from the User Crowd?

Is it because I am using a second copy of Live, on a different computer, and am being punished for something?javascript:emoticon('') Seems like it would be somewhat commonplace to have a home based computer, and another (hopefully notebook sized, which I don't), for the road javascript:emoticon('8)')...

I moved Live to different disks: internal, external - to no avail.javascript:emoticon('8O')

My OS X is on the external disk, and really cannot be moved ... unless I reinstall everything ... the authorization has not been a problem, as far as I can tell ... no windows asking for re-authorization ... maybe the disk activity is it being stuck trying to feel "ok"?javascript:emoticon('')

Comments / descriptions of your hardware setups (Macs) welcomed javascript:emoticon('')...

Know where I can get 3.0.2 ... someone said disk activity wasn't a problem then ... I missed that version release ...
