Shouldnt software be driving hardware prices down?

Post by downfader » Sat Nov 03, 2007 6:06 pm

Now if the magazines were to be beleived then we're all using software synths thesedays instead of 1u modules and the like, and DAW audio mixing instead of your mackies and spirits.

So how come the prices of things like the KS rack, Roland JP8080 and the virus synths continue to be healthy in the secondhand market, and in some cases be rising in price (I've seen several KS racks last year go for £165 sh, but recently they're going for nearer £200)

I just find it odd. :?

Not really... well surely not?

One of the other things I've noticed is that every ebay item i see listed carries the word "RARE!" in there. KS racks and Korg MS2000s are NOT rare. Neither are MS20s for gawdsakes. Plenty of those around, they'd do better to write "Fully working!" for the classic synths.

A mate had one of those - took him ages to get it fixed up (here in the UK atleast) but they sound ace. Always prefered the Jupider 8 though myself. Not something I'll ever get my hands on though.

Synths are cheaper now. Everyone is making those little plastic pieces of shit that they try to pass off as a state of the art instrument. Even when the big companies use metal on something it feels like tin and the pots feel like they are going to snap off and usually do.

That violates the Law of Supply and Demand. More likely it is the supply of hardware that has gone down due to the prevelance of software. Therefore the demand stays high and so do the prices.

..well I'm pee'd off this afternoon. :x Was bidding on a K4r and thought I had it until someone came in with a silly bid. I seriously dont think its worth that much (near 60 quid without delivery) as its so old and there was no manual/power supply.

I wanted it for a NiN type sound. Everything I bid for on ebay seems to end up going for stupid money.. heres some examples

Korg x5dr - £55 at a dealer, lately they're going for 75-90 on ebay it seems. 8O

Waldorf Pulse - got mine new for £200. Ebay... £190-250 :?

Oberheim Matrix 1000 - got mine from a dealer for £200 a few years back. Seen them for 250 at dealers and ebay alike lately.

KS Rack. Saw several at dealers for £160-175 depending on condition last year. Ebay - you can add 10% now.

:x Not happy. Still, I am getting a mint Drumstation for £110 delivered so that should build up the studio a little back to what it once was, though that wasnt ebay.

HW prices are actually pretty low if you price out what (e.g.) equivalent stuff would have cost in 1980s dollars (anyone recall how much a DX7 was when they came out?). and boutique stuff is always gonna be expensive, because there's limited supply. prices also stay up for some products because of all the new features (which is why hi-end computers are still expensive, even if you can get fully functional desktops for next to nothing).

if M Audio makes their stuff any cheaper they'll have to label it as 'broken on delivery' on the box.

I'll take quality over cost any day. put the time in the product to make it right on the first try, WOW me and I'll gladly pay extra.

things are starting to be considered "vintage" way too fast these days. like I've seen the ms2000 listed as vintage on ebay which to me is just insane.

but this "vintage before it's time" phenomenon seems to be a driving force in why things cost alot on ebay. that and the fact that electronic instruments have risen in popularity probably 200% in the last 10 years (though I could totally be wrong about that it's really just a number I pulled out of my ass)

there are still tons of people who hate software as well. I know all sorts of indie kids playing analog in rock bands.

on the other hand, the internet creates the market for out of date gear. if there was no ebay and no craigslist I'm betting vintage synths value would drop to almost nothing cause they were be seriously hard to move.
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.
