FAO - A Reason user OR Re-Wire Expert?!

Post by djritchie » Thu Nov 08, 2007 12:32 pm

Ok basically,

What would i gain from using Live 6 and Reason 4 (re-wired) - what does it achieve? how does it work? How do u do it? etc etc.?

the live sequencer engine and workflow, with reason for your synths.

live sends midi to reason and gets back audio. you can choose any of reason's 32 outputs as an audio input to live, and choose any of reason's instruments as a midi output from live.

parameter names - and even drum sample names - are mapped back through to the live gui so you can see what you're editing.

only just started doing this so can't say much more. seems good though.

edit: and you do it by firing up live first, then reason. it's that simple really.

You would gain the ability to use Live and Reason together

It doesn't achieve a damn thing unless you take the time to learn them both instead of posting questions that would take an entire book to answer

Works pretty well...open up live, create audio track, set "audio from" to Reason for the track, open up Reason...see "what does it achieve?" above

Not clear on what you are asking here...

Seriously, Live and Reason work well together and give you pretty unlimited capabilities for making any music you want to...but you have to RTFM and play around with them...then visit forums like this one for both Live and Reason but come with more "direct" questions about specific problems instead of vague questions that people have written books on to answer.

Good luck, they are both great programs by themselves and when used together, they are even better.

Check this:

You can also automate reason synth parameters using MIDI clip envelopes in Live

Well, I'm sure this has been discussed numerous times already, so I'll try to put it in a nutshell.

Reason is a standalone music production suite in the first place. Standalone speficially means that you a) don't have a VST interface to use VST Synths and plugins and b) you can't record audio directly into Reason. You'd have to record your audio in another sequencer and import it into NN-XT to use it if e.g. you just so happen to need vocals. The strong point about this closed architecture is that Reason is famous for being one of the most stable programs you can get for making music today, because the devs don't have to worry about plugin designers using undocumented opcodes or otherwise sloppy programming.

ReWire gives you an interface that connects your whole Reason rack to Live. This means, that you get additional midi ports on which to output your midi coming into ableton as well as additional sound ports that return the sound that is generated within Reason to Live. i won't post a complete walkthrough here but it's really quite plug and play and if both programs are installed cleanly should work out of the box. You can then basically use all the possibilities of Reason (the synths, drummachines and mastering/effects) in sync with your Live project. However you can NOT feed an audio track from Live into Reason to use the mastering suite on it for example. But you can play the Reason rack like a huge array of VST synths with included fx, that's how I'd describe it.
