ableton doesn't see via midi/audio interface?

Here’s a noobie question:

Why doesn’t ableton “see” the midi through the audio interface.

It only receives midi via USB directly in to the laptop, even though I have also connected a midi cable from the juno to the audio interface.

So… the only way I can get midi in to my computer is through USB, but then I am limited to ableton’s sound, where I would prefer to use the sound on my Juno G.

Any idea on what I am missing?
