Firepod/FP10 latency, drop outs, crackles, ARGGHHH!!!

Post by seanwolcott » Wed Nov 14, 2007 11:04 pm

So, a few months ago I purchased a Firepod. Im using with my 6 month old MacBook. Worked like a charm for a while. But now, for the last several weeks I get HORRIBLE latency issues, drop outs, crackles, etc.... I have read 30 + pages of forums with no idea of what to do. I'm using it with Ableton Live 6. If I unplug the Firepod and use just the MacBook built in audio card, no problems, works like a charm. With latency, it has to be somewhere around 900ms to work. Anything below makes it freak out... if I go up to 2000+ms it freaks out also.

I have tried a different firewire cable.
Turning off multi processor support in Ableton Live.
Turning off the airport/bluetooth
Tried going into audiomidi setup and setting clock source from "device" to "mac" and then back to "device."

Still, the problem persists. Has ruined multiple sessions... Can't deal with this any longer. Bummed out because otherwise, I love the Firepod. Just can't stand to be crippled any longer.

Any additional insights/ideas? THANKS!

Got the same problem with the Presonus Firebox. Not having the latency problem, considering 26ms of latency is still too much for me but not an huge problem. Hope there will be people here who will help us to fix this. I have my Presonus since March 2007 and the only thing who helped is adding an extra 2gig of RAM last week. But still have problems of clicks and pops. MUCH LESS but still having somes...(when i move windows or in heavy cpu usage...happens quite often anyway, even in small projects)

There are my specs : PowerPC G5 Single Core 1.8 Ghz / 3.5 Gig RAM / 320 HD internal / 320 HD Firewire External / Presonus Firebox plugged in Firewire / Mac OS X 10.4.11

Did you somehow sitch to a non-ASIO driver?
I'd check that in the pref's, and to be on the safe side, go to presonus' website and download the latest drivers and reinstall them.

There's no "ASIO driver" in OSX. The only audio driver available for OS X in Core Audio (im pretty sure of that, tell me if am wrong). And for the Presonus Firebox, there's no driver for the mac, it is class-compliant, it is using apple's FW audio drivers.

I just downloaded an Apple software update for tiger today that said it updated the Firewire firmware. I have heard some rumors that this is the problem. Not sure if thats true or what.... Will test again tonight.

Also, heard some rumors this is resolved in Leopard OS-X 10.5 Been holding off to upgrade, but if that will fix my woes, id get in a heartbeat.

In the meantime, still can't get work done and pulling my hair out!

keep us posted, we want to know more about. I am hesitating to upgrade to Leopard because on my G5, i think it will drive too much RAM and i'll lose memory to run everything else.
