how to keep the music going between sets?
im a semi newbie, i cant figure out how to keep the music going when opening another set, i can only think to do one super long set, is that what most people do?
i see your on a macbook, i also had this problem.
go into your folder where live is, right click live, then choose duplicate. another live will appear as live copy. now you can open 2 lives.
load up your set. if you want to be really fancy, you can save your sets with a play trigger. so when your ready to start mixing the next track in, you just have to press a button, and it will start. make sure the start button is different for your 2 tracks.

OH YEAH, Super long sets are the way forward!
For me it's loads of my own tracks I mix from a multiple channels and play some plugins live or to trigger samples. I also have whole mp3s in tracks that I can trigger as well.
I can be running anywhere from 2-16 tracks and hundreds of scenes (down) with multiple transitions and BPMs assigned so I can change things about as required.

Would really love a function to facilitate the transition between 2 sets.
Right now when I finish a set I often have echoes and reverbs still sounding, but loading the next one just cuts the sound.
That would be nice to have sounds still going thru the effects when you load the next set. ...for a starter...
Runnning 2 live apps is for what exactly? It seems to be locking away my midi devices...

Kaoss Pad...which is also nice because that's one less thing you have to worry about your computer screwing up or if your computer crashes or freezes. If you get a memory card you can also load it with loops/noises you can rely on, or make them on the fly based on the previous set.WaveRider wrote:Would really love a function to facilitate the transition between 2 sets.

what's the point in having 2 instances of Live open? you can just add all your tunes' .als files directly onto the track list title bar (you'll see a small generic file icon appear). just drag and drop where you want. all tracks and their associated audio, midi, plugins and settings will appear where you drop the .als
+1 for one big set.
With ableton you can actually delete most of the tracks and drag other sets in on the fly with little chance of audio drop out if you keep it sane.
There was an old thread linked to a blog post about ableton live performance strategy. I forget exactly what it was called but it was basically "people who start with empty set" versus "people who have it all set up and just execute a plan".
Anyone remember that?

@jinek - dunno, try it yourself and see. if sends/master effects aren't placed, its not hard to set those up again, is it? master effects from different sets can be grouped, dropped to the browser as a preset, and added to a master effect rack's chain where they can be switched if needed, easy. using one large set can also be less of a cpu-drain, as you're only using half the sends (if multiple tracks utilise the same send).

although the drop the .als on the running track is a great feature, I think it might be more usable for some than others. When there's a lot of returns and routing going on in each set, this can be a pain and a show killer.
Pretty much all of my live sets are very different from each other and don't really lend themselves to being interchangable like this.
If you're doing a more scene launch/ minor tweak kinda performance then this will probably work pretty well.
What I do instead of a kaoss pad (which I don't own) is to use the 2 instance of Live technique but have one of these acting kindof like a kaoss pad.
I'll set it up with 1 track of audio set to record the output of the soundcard.
Towards the end of the song on the first instance of live, I'll record some of the end of the 1st song into the 2nd instance of Live (which has some of the most common effects I use for a little noise fun).
then as I fade or end the 1st song in the 1st instance, I'll begin fucking up/tweaking stuff in the snippet of audio in the 2nd instance.
While I'm doing this, Song/ Set 2 is loading up in instance 1 and when it's all good, I'll mix outta the noise I've been doing back into instance 1 and away we go.
Now I know this could also be done more simply by just using the 2 instances and loading the next song in instance 2 and mixing between, but most of my sets are close to killing my cpu and this just doesn't work (as soon as the 2nd set starts to load a couple of reaktors etc., instance 1 starts to crap out.
But in a perfect world with unlimited cpu that would be optimal.
Although my way let's me subject the audience to 30-90 seconds of mayhem which can sometimes be liberating
