Anyone using two Remote Zero SLs side by side?

Post by aqua_tek » Mon Nov 19, 2007 7:31 pm

I sold my 25 SL a couple weeks ago, after having bought my TI Polar, figuring i wouldnt really need 2 keyboards when essentially the Polar works perfectly fine as a midi controller besides being an awesome fucking synth.

well.... although i dont regret getting the Polar at all, i do kind of regret letting go of the SL. Especially now that i'm planning to work on some actual live sets, instead of using Live strictly for production.

So... looking at a few options here and there, i think the Remote SL series is probably one of the best choices for a performance controller right now, and i think my next acquisition might just be a Zero SL.

but what about two? I'm thinking it would be awesome. Think about it... its not even such an expensive deal. For the price of (for example) a Xone 2d (which i'd been lusting after), I can buy TWO Zero SLs (which I think would be a lot more functional) and have an extra 100 bucks to... gasp! buy the upgrade to Live 7! Plus how cool would that look? 2 Zero SLs side by side? Red LED's and blueish LCD's. The groupies would simply find me irresistible. OK, i'm sold

So... anyone using two Zero SLs (or any 2 of the SL series) running side by side? Is this really as practical as the idea sounds? or would the Automap Universal thing create some issues? Etc etc etc etc

I have no answer but I'm curious too. Wanting to add an extra SL but not sure how it would work.

sorry to say i have no answers either, but very interested in this.

maybe it's not such a stretch if you used one in automap mode and the other set to a user customised template. or can you have 2 or more SLs working, but have both using seperate, or the same, user customised template? hmmmm, interesting, someone please speak up!

As somebody who frequently buys gear for no other discernable reason than staving off depression for a couple days I would say buy controllers as you need them. Maybe get the most out of 1 SL and buy a second when you've run out of options with just one. I don't think most of us even know exactly what our ideal setup would be. We just see a box loaded with buttons, knobs, and faders have to have it....and then we all get mad when they don't have a crossfader.

 yeah that's pretty much the case for me. I'm a hopeless gearwhore.

Anyways yes, it makes sense to start out with one... but the idea of 2 still sounds damn sexy. I'll probably get one this Xmas and then in the following months will decide if getting another one will help............... or maybe i'll see another nice box with pretty lights, knobs and buttons that i need to have

Scroll down and look at the price. I'm still waiting for them to ship mine. So yeah, I'm probably not the best person to talk to about self control when buying gear.

I'm using a Remote SL zero and a remote SL 49 compact together. They work fine. Use the zero in automap mode and the keyboard with manual templates for Live. Spoke to Novation before I bought them both and they confirmed that there wouldn't be a problem. Not sure if there would be issues in other apps though.

I've got a Remote SL Zero and Remote SL 37 running side-by-side  talk about a tempting offer- I posted my FCB1010 on craigslist for $150 and some guy e-mailed me offering to trade his Zero and I nearly choked. Anyways, there aren't any issues here. Idk about PC, but I'm on a Mac, and you have to rename the controllers properly (they both show up as "Remote SL") Otherwise the mac will see both SLs as one controller. You can actually run automap mode on both controllers simultaneously, but I usually just set my Zero to automap mode (mainly used for controlling transport, track levels, panning, etc.) while I use my 37 for playing synths and whatnot.

In my opinion the only point in having two Remote SLs is to eliminate some of the fiddling involved in selecting the right templates or having to switch back and forth between two.

I don't have two SL's but I have an SL Zero and a Xio-Synth and they work great together. And I know that it says that you can use multiples on their website somewhere.
What I would fully recommend is to get one Sl Zero and one Remote 25 Sl Zero just so you can assign important functions to the keys, ecspecially since the drum pads are absolutley useless on those things (IMO).
And it Does sound like it would make more sense to use only one in automap mode and just have the other set up as a generic midi controller.
Damn now I'm starting to lust over having to SL's.
