ok, i know its been discussed before but.. live+linux/wine?

so i just read up on live under linux (again), and it seems that some people claims to have it up and running fine (up to 6.x), while others cant even get it to start.

hows your linux+live experience?
i really want to get rid of windows, and afaik reactos doesnt support live yet.

yeah i know, i should buy a mac just like all you cool kids but heres the lowdown: buying a mac means money, and money is not really surplus for me.

anyone have any wine/virtual box/vmware experiences with live and a linux dist?

oh btw Ableton: linux port!

the problem with using WINE is that every little performance problem you have with Live, youre not going to know if its a WINE problem, or a Live problem or a Linux problem.

Youll be dedicating music making time to setting up a non supported platform, for absolutely no benefit.

if linux is important to you, switch to XT! otherwise enjoy the already stable mac and win platforms and enjoy cranking out da phat choons.

(id love it if the major DAWs were on Linux, but at the moment its a pipe dream so gotta deal with what we've got)

funny you should say that as im really really considering switching to XT. i love live, and im so used to working with it but i dont really want to be stuck in windows world because of one piece of software only.
dual booting isnt really an option for me since live is basicly up and running all the time anyways.

people are claiming to getting in a working state with wine though, thats why i posted this thread in the first place. to see what experiences people have with it.

but unless there a major breakthrough in the VM world or the wine development, i will switch for sure.

Wine is also quite different from VMWare. VMWare runs a low level emulation that on multiple processors can almost be as fast as a native OS, but really isnt a great idea for real time processes like audio. WINE uses the Windows drivers through some sort of wrapper, so youre still using Windows code anyway! (i think this is right, but I know the Linux Massive will correct me!)

i was posting this thread to see what experiences people have had with live in another enveriment except windows or mac, not to discuss whether or not you people call wine an emulator or not (even though the name clearly states that its not).

I tried to run live 6.0.10 under Ubuntu (Gutsy) and Kanotix using Wine without success of any sort. I know that's not much help but it's all I can contribute

my friend has acid running under wine, and running better then on his windows box.

I have a box to test on here at work, it's a matter of getting the time away from work to dink around on side stuff

i tried the lacklab dist, and it was horrible. then again, i installed as dual boot on a ubuntu studio dist, and ubuntu studio was pretty damn perfect for me.

Are you running Live on it?
If so, which audio interface... drivers?
Any 3rd party plugins (if so, which ones)?

What other applications have you tried?

Or, are you using Linux DAW apps and plugins?
