problems with ableton 7 and missed midi notes from max msp

Post by queglay » Mon Dec 10, 2007 11:53 am

i programmed a sequencer which sends note on and note off's in 16 steps per bar.

for some reason ableton 7 isn't interpreting midi messages correctly.

it also has trouble passing through the midi information from my keyboard correctly to ableton.

ableton seems to recieve the information (the green light flashes), however the notes aren't always passed through to the track. as far as i can tell this is random and i can't seem to find the cause.

if anyone is experience some similar issues or knows what the problem might be, i'd love to know!

i've played with mme/directmusic settings and tried using physical midi ports instead of vms but this didn't seem to make a difference.

all this stuff used to work perfectly in ableton 6 and before.

can anyone else provide any advice on this? is anyone else having problems with max msp, sequenced midi notes and ableton 7?

it seems to corrupt the ableton midi engine for the duration of the session, and even midi notes recieved from my normal keyboard dont work any more.

ableton tech support have offered me nothing on this.

the strange thing is, note on and note off messages still flash the green light in the top right hand corner. its just that the note on and note off messages wont necesarily be recorded properly by the instrument track.

Same problem! Ableton notes hang when sending midi to Reason

Post by rudestar » Sun Jan 20, 2008 8:40 pm

Hey I have had the exact same problem with a sequencer I made with synth edit on PC and all versions of live 6. I have also found issues with EMX Midi plugin within live as well. Funny you should say it worked in 6 because that wasnt the case for me.

The weirdest thing is that now I am having a similar problem seems to be occuring with would you believe....Reason 4!! I create a basic MIDI clip with a few short notes and run its output to Thor on reason 4 hooked up as a rewire slave with a monophonic bass synth (Fat Boy for example). The loop plays a bit and randomly a note will be held for a whole bar making the synth glide all over the shop.

It seems that running miidi routing through live just is not solid and notes will lag and hold randomly. (Albeit this effect is often kind of musical nevertheless incredibly frustrating)

Previously i thought this was only a problem with MIDI plugins and i had simply accepted the fact that building my own pattern sequencer for use in live was just not going to work, but my experience here is proving that the problem is more wide spread than this and I am shocked that there is not more users with a similar gripe so when I saw this post i had to reply.

I tried to place a forum post and ableton had answered reasonably quickly but asked me about my hardware version and which plugins it affected etc the only thing was that since i programmed the sequencer and I am a newbie at that i couldnt be certain it wasnt my shoddy coding...

But my mis adventures with a solid package such as reason on a new system proves to me this is a legitimate bug that needs addressing.

2 issues:

1) when a MIDI clip is playing in session view some note on and note off messsages aren't getting through to Reason
2) when a MIDI VST efect is playing on a track some note on or note off messages aren't getting through to VST instruments when they are connected to the output of the MIDI effect plugin.

For ableton my specs are:

Intel Mac Book Pro 2.4
Live 6.0.10
Reason 4
EDIROL FA-66

this is probably related to something else in your case. ableton support seem to have narrowed down the issue to issues with sampler and multiple voices on multicore machines. I tried the most recent beta and the situation improved a bit, but it wasn't solved.

the problem may be in the midi software your using. you could try using a physical midi port instead to see if the probalem goes away.

Hi guys,

if the problem occurs for very short notes,
open your Option.txt file for editing and
add the line

-_AllowZeroDurationNotes

Does that solve the problem?

http://www.ableton.com/pages/faq/options_text
will guide you to the file in case you don't
know where to find it.

cheers,
Jan

could well be. i love a bit of staccato. I'll try, thanks
btw on my system the preferences.cfg resides in :
c:documents and settings/user/application data/ableton/live (version number)/preferences

..which is not where the "http://www.ableton.com/pages/faq/options_text" says it is !!!

i've tried to mess with the preferences.cfg file to allowzeroduration notes, however when i open up the live 7 preferences file, it is very garbled and not as cleanly laid out as it used to. why is that so?

I tried deleting it and starting over but it didn't make a difference. its unreadable.

Why are you messing with the .cfg file?
Options.txt is a txt file like the extension says...

And its not there by default. If you never used an options.txt before, then you need to create one.
