Audio & Video Combined DJ'ing

Post by m.nash » Sat Dec 15, 2007 9:04 pm

Really interested in the idea of creating a dj set that has both audio and video.

Not so interested in things like mixing music videos, more so be DJ'ing, and have crazy video's being mixed and effected freely.

The questions I have is:
What programs allow for some really sick video mixing and effects?

Is there a program solution that combines these together so you can do solo? And does it come close to the flexibility of 2 standalone setups, 1 for the music, 1 for the video.

Whats the logisitics if you want to do this at clubs? Usually the lighting and video controls are tucked away in some corner, so if the Video DJ wants to be on stage, how would they plugin?

And basically any experience you could share with this would be much appreciated. Love the potential of the future.

That is the most reliable way, there is also Virtual DJ software and various combinations of mostly Live+ VJamm, Arkaos or Module8 and other visual softwares. Virtual DJ is so so, probably VJamm is the best for any AV. That is what Coldcut uses ( with Ableton, though they use the Pioneers too).

u can mix video like audio with the the ttm 57sl mixer and apply fx etc.. the crossfader is blending between the vids but there are a lot more possibilities afaik.

check the manual, there is a download link

For as flexible as Live is it's going to be great when we can also do more traditional style DJing AND VJing AND DMX lighting all within Live. It's getting there but not quite yet. It's all going to take third party plugins but it would be awesome if/when all those features are native and not just with fancy work arounds.

the Just Add Music plugin I think has a lot of potential..... except its mac only. so no good for me, and its gonna take time to develop.

I'm blowin' away with how lacking the market is for a comprehensive VJ Software thats of good quality and easy to integrate. Can anyone correct me if I'm wrong?

There is TONS of VJ software out there.

www.vjforums.com

I use Arkaos VJ, which interfaces brilliantly with Live.

i was on there last night. it seems like theres no really slick app out there yet. like i know i'm acting spoiled but it seems like its really still in development.

i tried arkaos last night, i found the effects to be really cheezy, not sure if their or add ons or customization.

It all seemed to be missing some key stuff like:
Scratching functions
Crossfade
Composite layering
etc.

Does it indeed have this?

Any basic video app will have this, dude. I think you may need to dig a bit deeper into any one of the apps, perhaps?

For "basic" stuff with the flexibility of going a *lot* further I really like Modul8. It's by far the coolest vj-app out there that you can just jump right into, yet has particle systems and all that weird shit. Osx only.

Personally I use custom Cycling74 Jitter apps, which can realize any conceivable video effect in real-time. But again, that sort of flexibility won't be had without digging through manuals and such.

I will personally steer clear of "JustAddMusic", based purely on philosophical reasons, but hey, I'm definitely not in the core market at all.

"Philisophical Reasons????"

Are you serious or taking the piss?

Supporting the War in Iraq, signing the Kyoto agreement, supporting abortion on demand or gay marriage are all things that you could do or not do based on philosophical reasons, this is a piece of software!!!

Please tell me why you don't like this software. I think it looks promising, especially how closely it integrates into Live.

I've used Arkaos and it is getting a bit dated now, havn't tried modul8 but heard great things about it.

JAM has some great promise - close integration with live, automatic audio to visual FX (beat repeat etc works great), but its still beta software and has some issues.. namely no loops for clips (arggh), hence no follow actions, and the fact that you have to use a JAM friendly Live template at the moment, rather than making something that fits with your current live set..

Its still in development so i'd give it time to mature... (check the demo out, its still quite flakey) Its not as flexible as using a dedicated VJ app (i use Modul8) but then its much quicker to get up and running with simple clip launching from the session view..
