my first launch of Ableton 7...and how today I saved money.

Post by mauxuam » Sun Dec 16, 2007 6:21 pm

I was really exited...credit card ready to be burned for a massive upgrade to 7 + Instruments...then I decided to use my past (bad) experience..and I went to try the demo first.

since I am busy working on an album I decided to try it with some project I already nearly finished in Abl 6...they are quite complicated but 6 seems to handle them quite well,..my hope was that the new version was more stable and make my work more fluid.

first project loaded..............crash.........simple as that...maybe it is some plug in I am using (but it was fine in 6)

second project loads...no problem...fiuuu.....press play with a smile...
disaster again.
...it sounds like if I put blueglitch and livecut on all of it...

cpu spikes...jumps...displays funny numbers (never seen before my cpu working at 247%!)

I didn't manage to get even 4 bars playing decently.

maybe my system is not powerful enough ?
I thought that a g5 dual 1.8 was enough to keep me going till 2010....are the Ableton guys working togheter with Intel to make us all switch cpu ?

I have to say that I love using Ableton but in the last week I found myself working again with that old smelly software of Cubase SX2 (I don't upgrade that one)...
a software 3 years older...but still overall it feels more solid and stable than Ableton (I know...ridicolous isn't it?)...

so I decided to turn to Audio Damage website and buy 5 of their amazing plugs instead...and still some money left....yaiii....

Not to worry, i'm having problems like this with a Quadcore 3Ghz Intel cpu.

It's related to Live7 being buggier than anything i've seen in years.

Hi mauxuam and Acidfever,

Sorry you guys are having trouble with Live. Would you mind
sending me your exact system configuration and list of
plug-ins you usually use? Please make it as detailed
as possible.

You can PM me if you don't want to send it public.

Thanks,

Carl

Hi Carl,
thanks for the attention.
well...in the last 20 years I went through this story again and again...
I was a beta tester for Cubase at the Atari golden times, but now I am well over it.
and for sure I am not paying for a license to just be a kind of second grade beta (teta, delta,) tester. I am actually really surprised to see that after 20 years of software industry we are still on this level...and the industry is still getting away with it.

I am sorry but this is not the way...
last night I nearly started the all process of disinstalling all the plugs, disconnect the UAD cards etc etc...I know this story too well...
then I thought that the value of that time and energy spent trying to solve a problem (that I didn't have before I decided to buy Live7 only 10 minutes before) was enormouslys bigger than the euros of the update...
so I decided to chill out...roll a joint and continue working with Ableton 6 (without all the fancy bits of the 7).

I am not a geek, I am just a computer user (with a good knowledge and experience about it)

I just want to USE it and BE CREATIVE with it...and I want to buy a decently working product....and not spending hours and hours configuring my system again and again (I let the new generation do that)...

only having a fast reading of the many posts here I can see that it is not only my problem, so I seriously doubt that there is anything to do with my setup...
and even so...WHY ABLETON 6 IS WORKING OK THEN ?

I understand all the problems connected in releasing a DAW in this time and age ...with all the 3rd party develepers, plugs, different OS and CPUs etc etc...
and I aknowledge to Ableton to be cutting edge software in creativity and ideas...
BUT...this is not an excuse to release a buggy shit like that.
so maybe your beta testing was not so well done (with all the respect for the testers here) or maybe also Ableton strategy is going more and more towards the paradigma of: MORE PROMOTION-MORE MARKETING-LESS DEVELOPMENT.

anyway...I will pm you my setup when I will have the time to track it down (busy here too)....actually I am not in such a rush to be UPDATED...
I tend to not use the LATEST technology...I try to use the one just before that...the one that works.

so happy buggy christmas to all of you Live7-Intel-Leopards out there...
I will cuddle my 6-tiger-g5 and be productive in the meantime...
and wait another quarter....or two.

thanks again for the attention

You know, sometimes I really feel for the Abes who politely, calmly and tactfully try to help those who are having issues. And then they have to endure self-important rants like this one.

solovox...my post may sound self important to you...very sorry about that.
I was only taking out of my chest a feeling that I have about this beta testing and upgrading story.
and I don't think I missrespected the Ableton ppl at all...actually if I am writing here is because I have some kind of respect...if not I would just relax and continue with my stuff.
as I said before...I don't need their help yet since I am very happy with Live 6 and all is sweet and groovy...I let them work it out and in the meantime I do my job
I only try to explain them why I am not giving them anymore money....even if I really would like to.

That's cool...and I hear you; I've never seen a program go through 7 versions in 6 years, but that's the way we're going to roll around here.

I was once very perturbed in the same way...Live 5 was an unmitigated disaster to me...none of my live performance sets operated well in 5. Live 6 put those problems to rest. It seems to me that with so many different CPU's, audio interfaces, and (the big one) plug-ins, it's a wonder to me that any software works well!

I just learned to keep the anger at bay and talk directly with them...I'm passionate about the program and I personally tried out about 10 betas going back and forth with them directly in Germany...because I wanted to help. If that's not your bag, I totally understand...but let's just be nice and work on back channels to gripe. I just see folks flaming them sometimes and they never retaliate...which I would, of course. ;-)

I totally agree with you solovox...and again sorry for the ranting.
tnx for your passion with Ableton software and the beta testing...
I respect this work because I know how hard it is.
at the same time I have on my desktop more than 10 upgrades waiting...
(the most scary one is the OS that probably I will never do)...
and I see that my trust in the software companies is really diminished.
to be honest I am actually considering to buy a set up like yours...with a solid XP...
and some solid old trusted software. I am bored with this coolest mac story.
I was once very passionate about software too...now I have a less religious approach.
I just tend to use what works for me, I want a simpler digital life I guess.

ps. I am amazed by Reaper...only a preview for mac still....but works really well.
