quattro usb set up

Post by j4nyc » Sun May 30, 2004 2:40 pm

just wondering how you set up the m-audio quattro for use with live.

i have an edirol pcr-50 midi keyboard controller which i want to use for djing [mixing full length tracks (6min plus)]

no problems there except that i want a way to monitor the incoming mix (the track that follows the one playing on the speakers)

i have tried using the pfl switch on the master but this can get a little messy since it is difficult to monitor the levels before i bring them in.

i have previous topic about 'mixing full length tracks' where robbmasters wrote about changing the send to the master to in/out 3/4. ie: send track 1 to channel 1/2 on the quattro and track 2 to channel 3/4. i couldn't figure out how to do this since it wasn't an option given on the 'in/out' menus. is there a problem with the set up my sound card.

essentially i am looking for advice on how to configure my quattro and midi controller most effectively for djing with full length tracks.

thanks!

OK - I got it that you have a Quattro attached via USB to Live and you want to set it up for doing DJing.

Let's assume you have the Quattro setup for 4-in and 4-out. What do you have going into the Quattro -> Live and where do you need that signal out of Live to be routed to?

Do you have a mixer? They can really help organize and manage a complicated desk.

I have a 2 channel dj mixer. But i would prefer to use my edirol for mixing the tracks themselves.

The output signal i want routed to the main speakers and i also want an output routed to my headphones so i can monitor the signal.

I'm not a dj so feel free to correct me here - let's say you have as inputs:

1 - mic - mono
1 - turntable - stereo
1 - music source - stereo

which you want the output:

mixed to a stereo out routes through a PA AND monitor out to a set of cans.

I'm assuming your "music source" above will be Live - correct? If so you can bring the mic and turntable into inputs 1, 3&4 on the Quattro - 3&4 being a stereo L&R split. Pysically plug those devices into those jacks on the back of your Quattro.

Plug Quattro output 1 and 2 into inputs on your mixer. Plug your cans into the phone output and send the output from your mixer to your PA. If your mixer doesn't accomodate this think about buing a new one - a good compact unit is a must and real cheap these days.

In the Quattro control panel be sure it's set for 1-4 in, 1-4 out.

If you want to go Output 1&2 to PA and 3&4 to your cans - wire them accordingly. Be sure your Sends tracks are displayed through View->Sends. In the output drop-down in Send 1 select A.1 Output (AudioSport Output)

On each of your Tracks be sure the Send 1 rotary dial is turned all the way to the RIGHT so it displays in orange [or whatever hightlight colour]. Now everything that goes through that Track will get routed to Send 1 AND the Master [as long as you keep Master selected in the Output drop-down].

You can verify this by displaying the Bus window with the Output tab selected and watching the VU's - both of which should be reading as active when something is played or monitored through that track.

Click the little Bus icon in the bottom right corner of the Live screen, click the Input tab at the far left of the new window that appears. This will display 2 sets of left and right faders with a link button underneath. Click the Link button under the first set of faders [those to the left] so it is NO LONGER LIT. This step now lets you select either input 1, or 2 or 3&4.

Now you have to decide which track you want to bring which device in. They can be easily reordered later, so it's not a big deal. Let's start with Track 1. Be sure View->In/Out is selected In the drop-down that says None towards the bottom of Track 1 select Live In. This will activate a drop-down directly below it that allows you to select the Input you want routed to this track. Select the first one - the way they're named here really sucks - and this will assign Input 1 to this track. Leave it set to Master out.

To activate monitoring through this track you must select the little microphone icon beside the volume slider [be sure View->Mixer is active]. At this point a signal from your mic should be coming through this track. If not, make sure the Mic is properly plugged in and the Input Level buttons are IN and all others [except the power obviously] are in the OUT position on the front of the Quattro box. If a signal is reading both on the Track 1 and Master VU's and you are still not hearing anything, make sure your outputs - Out 1&2 - are connected to something - as noted above.

Back to Live - so you've got your microphone coming in on Track 1. Follow the same procedure to bring your turntable in on Track 2 through inputs 3&4 which are a stereo pair. Check the signal is active as per notes above.

This should leave you with one spare mono input jack that you can use for whatever you wish.

Use the rest of the tracks for your "music source" sending everything to the Master out and Send 1. You can shut the mic channel off by simply toggling the little microphone icon. I assign those to either a keyboard key or midi note for faster and more efficient switching. Sweeten and adjust each track to taste - and you can get really creative here with Live and VST plugins. You can get funky using the Sends for sub-bus mixing.

Hope this helps.
