City of Apes

Finished working on my first track with Live7 a couple of days ago - check it out at the above URL & let me know what you think. I created all the waveforms by hand using .ams files, built the synth sounds from scratch, and then added some radio vocal samples and a Live7 Drum Machine kit.

Enjoy,
Ross

Very cool. I like the synth sounds, especially the bell-like sounds that aren't quite definite pitch, but aren't quite percussion either. Nice work on the drum programming- getting some nice snare rolls. My only complaint would be that it was a bit homogeneous- could've used a change or transition.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

Exaltron, you're right, I do want to add some kind of transition to the piece, I just haven't worked out what it should be yet :-) I like the sparsity of it right now so I want to avoid adding too many more layers. There's also a lot of randomness in the playback (using lots of clip follow actions) so I have to work out how to impose some order on that at given points I guess, so that I can take it somewhere...

Yeah, I'm the tosser who always has to add more and more until I've kneaded the dough to death

This is great.

It puts me in mind of The Orb's early work. It's the samples maybe. Definitely cool.
It also has flavors of New Order, on codeine...

I mean these both as compliments. Hope you feel the same.

I would love to hear the pads come into the foreground more, sort of swelling over the mix.

Other than that, a great start for 2008.
gimme more.

Hey thanks for the comments Jetmark. I hadn't thought of either of those bands as influences, but weirdly I did love The Orb's early work (Little Fluffy Clouds, Toxygene era) and I'm originally from Manchester in the UK, home of New Order, so it was impossible to miss them when I was a kid! They must have seeped into my brain... :-)

Cheers,
Ross
