Enigma is the project of Michael Cretu, *Curly MC*, a hungarian/german who looked somewhat like a porno star with his curly hair and beard. A brilliant synthpop producer.

A guy who was more famous for producing 80's German pop diva Sandra, who he subsequently married and moved to Ibiza with in the late 80's, originally they were based in Munich.

Sandra is the girlie singer on the enigma records.

Sad, but they used to be guilty pleasures of mine, discovered them on an exchange trip to Germany in 1986. I also liked Cretu's solo album 'Die Chinisische Mauer' in 1985, a great example of DX7 and early samplers like Emulator and Fairlightsounds and MIDI power !

I still love Enigma and celebrate their entire catalog.

I would even argue that the beat he used for Principles of Lust/Sadeness is even more universally recognizable than the Amen Break. Show up to a party full of average people and play the Amen Break and you'll get a bunch of blank stares. Throw on the Sadeness beat and everybody will instantly go "Hey! Enigma!" and then start molesting each other.

Don't know about that, but quite possibly, considering he bought a mansion on Ibiza with his own digital recording studio that cost millions. Might not have had a lot of spare change to fork over to the monks after that little expense !

Actually, along with people like Trevor Horn, he was a leading proponent of digital recording, all of Sandra's albums from 1986 onwards plus Cretu's solo work and Enigma were completely recorded and edited digitally.
