Help! Problem with 'Audio Engine being disabled'

Every now and then I get a 'OFF' in the cpu meter and a message in the info bar saying 'Audio Engine is off' please choose from preferences in the audio device box. However when I try and configure the input and output config nothing works - is this a major bug?
