Can I move my VST?

Post by brightonalex » Mon Jan 28, 2008 2:11 pm

Sorry for the stupid question. Some of my VSTS are causing me problems, and now I've updated to Live 7 I want to just use the new VST folder for the ones I use the most. If I cut and paste a dll to the new location, will it still point to all the nki files or samples or whatever it uses?

What if I copy and paste it?

Thanks

it depends on how the vst is built. If it reads the location from registry then it will still find them, if not then you have to move the samples / directory structure.

Only solution is to try it and see :)
won't hurt.

live reads links to dll... so you can create links to all those vst/s you use most and put those links in a brand new folder, then open live and set this folder as plugin directory.. clean and organized :)

OK - so I right click the dll, "create link", and copy that link to my new, organized folder? Is that right?

just rename your current vst - folder to semething like vst save, create a new
one (with the old name of the original vst folder), copy the dll s of the vst you want to move from the save folder to the new one. i never had problems with that, but if something does not work, you just delete the new folder and rename the old one and all is like it was.

Just one thing to keep in Mind!!!!!!!!!:

if you uninstall insruments or fx, the dll will remain in your new vst folder, cause you manually copied it there, so you should delete it manually. If you don t do this, it could crash live when you open a set which contains the uninstalled vst, because live finds the dll and trys to use the programm, which is not there anymore.
If the dll is also not there, live just disables the plugin in the set.

I hope this was understandable and clear, it once took me quite a time to figure this out.
