Session Drums and Firewire Drives Workaround
Session Drums and Firewire Drives Workaround
Recieved SD today and installed it on a firewire, changed my library back to my HD library and all the waveforems for SD are on the firewire. I can play them individually in Live, but can't play any kits or anything else, I get the orange samples missing...super super irritating. Any ideas? Tried searching on this, others have had similar probs but nothing seems resolved. Software is unlocked, have tried restarting, collect and save, nothing seems to work. Searching turns up 3000 plus candidates but after that...nothing....PLEASE help!

I changed the library location back to the FW drive and everything was there. I changed it to the other library location on the HD and it was gone again. Does this mean i have to have one library only, in this case on my FW drive b/c the SD package is so absolutely massive? (i'm using a MBP don't have 30 gigs of free space)? My understanding was you could set up a library on the FW for installation, then change it back to your HD later...
umn, you have to install it to whatever library is in focus in live.nepotist wrote:I changed the library location back to the FW drive and everything was there. so like if you want it on your internal you have to install the 26 livepacks again OR copy and drag your library (The easier and safer option)
MacBook Pro T7600 / OS X 10.5.7 / Ableton Suite 8.0.2 / Peak Pro XT 6.1.1 / ReMOTE 37SL
thanks for the reply, i guess i'm not making myself clear...I want the session drums package on the firewire drive, the library on the HD. But you have to install Session drums to a library, so I changed the HD library and made a new one in the FW, installed session drums, bookmarked the folder, and switched the libary back to my internal HD. So now i have a session drums bookmark, all the samples are in there and play, but none of the kits link up, if i throw a kit into the midi channel, its says Samples Miissing, even though they are all in the waveform folder. I had live do a search, it found all the samples yet does not relink them. There is literally like a paragraph on installing session drums in the manual, none of which mentions anything about HAVING to install it in the same library as the rest of your stuff. I'm doing this because I don't have room for the full package on my MBP....does this make any sense?
actually they just emailed me with this:
Hello,
Yes, you can only have one library - so if you install the session drums
on an external drive, it will only
work if you have the library path in the Live preferences adjusted to it.
best,
C. Kleine
Which i think is kind of BS, becasue there is no kind of warning anywhere that says you can't run session drums on its own on an external drive. I don't want to run my whole library from the FW, its a pain. I only want to have to pull out the firewire for Session Drumsl. If anyone knows a workaround, i'm all ears.

Longjohns is the man to ask on all matters file manager related...hopefully he'll chime in
he has written a couple of threads about doing this
but AFAIK you only needed to install it and bookmark from the browser
yeah i saw that post, i was hoping it was true, but i haven't been able to make it work. Abelton sent another email saying that a lot of laptop users were in the same boat but they didn't have a work around as of yet. I've tried a few workarounds, one is to just work up some drums and then export it as an audio file, and then switch back to the internal HD. But that's kind of annoying. I don't see why it has to be this way, but i just wish I knew this info before i forked over the money...so as a warning...if you are planning on installing session drums on an external drive to save space, IT DOESN"T WORK!! DON"T BUY IT! Here is the second Ableton response:
I´m afraid there´s no workaround at the moment - our developers work on
this but there´s no announce date yet.
I think every laptop user does face this problem.
Best,
Christian Kleine

uh,
well,
I'm not buying that it doesn't work.
Unfortunately my music computer is still mothballed so it is hard for me to do definitive tests right now.
But I KNOW that I have done this with EIC packs, and it has worked.
As far as I understand, I don't see how the library cares what volume the samples are on, so long as it knows where they are.
I am a little bit confused as to where the different elements are in nepotist's specific case. The samples are on the firewire drive, that's clear. Are the .adg, .adv, whatever, preset files that go with the session drum packs also on the firewire drive?
Actually f*(&# it, I just bought this hard drive adapter thing, so I will try to install a session drums pack onto a hard drive connected to that. Should be about the same scenario. I'll report back

cool, let me know what you found out. The Session Drums package can only install to the library though...everything was on the firewire, the presets and the waveforms. In my case i've now moved my 40 gigs of MP3s to the external and the session drums are now reinstalled on the internal...works fine now. But like you, i can't beleive that this is how it works. there's got to be a workaround.

I just tried this and it looks like you're right - installing the session drums on an external HD is a total mess
I damn sure hope this gets adressed in a bug-fix release because I sure as hell dont have the HD room spare for 28 gigs in my laptop and my library is about 24GB so there's no room for that on the external
I've just been messing about with the dragging the folders from the browser to 'automatic search' and that only finds multiple candidates although it only says there is one (another bug with file manager)
I guess I'll file a bug report later unless one of you feels like doing it
it seems there are 2 bugs -
1. is the problem you mentioned here
2. Live reports multiple candidates even though under 'nuber of candidates' it says 1 - this means I cant use automatic search and would have to replace each 1 by 1 - what a total PITA

in the meantime, i'm out of unlocks on live 6, which leads me to say "actually guys, the copy protection is a bit naff"
I suppose that shouldn't interfere with installing packs though??
unfortunately my EIC is on the internal drive and I'm not about to move it so I cant confirm that
but this really needs to be sorted ASAP, if people suddenly have to install 28 GB of samples, there HAS to be an option to do it externally - I have a nasty feeling they will file this as a 'wish' and not a bug
thinking about it - it seems like the simplest way to achieve this might actually be to implement what I thought you meant in the other thread - allow us to put a windows shortcut, or alias to the samples on the Ext HD so that Live thinks they are in the library but only references the folders
