Analysis files - do i really need them?

what am i compromising by turning off the 'create analysis file' button?

I've warped tracks with this turned off, and noticed that when reopening the session, it still remembers the warp points, it just requires live to rescan through the track. So I was wondering what am I gaining by turning the button on, or what am I compromising by turning it off

just trying to save some hard drive space really

also, the warping of mp3s leaving a wav on the hard drive is really annoying. is their anyway around this?

i'm not sure you'd actually save that much space turning this off, as all this info is stored in the .asd files (at least on pc...) and they never really seem to get that big. it also means that, as you've noticed, it takes a bit longer to get your samples loaded each time, but if you can live with that then it might be worth it if you're really tight for space.

you can't do away with live decoding mp3s to wav, but you can set a limit on the size of the decoding cache in the preferences. you can set that pretty small but basically it means that when the limit is reached live deletes wav files from the cache meaning some files have to be decoded from mp3 again, the result again being that it'd take longer to load samples that you have in mp3 format. this is another one that if you're tight for room it's worth putting up with i guess.

Hard drive space is cheap these days... If I were you I'd splash out some cash for another external, say 500GB to 1TB. That'll last ya.

Can you save these files in a folder other than the one your tracks are in?

re: external drives. I don't really fancy lugging a hard drive around with me as well as all the controllers and stuff, but maybe i'll have to

Dear lord, how many .asd files do you have to require an additional drive?! I've got directories and directories of warped music for DJing/sampling and gigs of samples. A total of 6438 .asd files, at about 146.5 megs. It's a non-issue. If you're concerned with saving space, then worry about your actual audio files, not the analysis files.

Or I didn't read the post right and you actually do want to use it for sample storage. In that case, just get a 2.5" bus powered firewire drive. There are models that can fit into your pocket. They are also really cheap, and keep getting cheaper. Alternatively, upgrade the hard drive in your Powerbook to something like 300gigs. It can be done.
