Audio to Midi

Post by vinny_vinyl » Mon Feb 11, 2008 3:18 am

I’m just wondering if there's any way in ableton or any other program to take an audio file & convert it to midi notes. Basically what I’d like to do is take a groove from a track. Not everything but just the bassline for
example. I doubt it can be done but I was told there is ways to do it.
Any ideas would be great & please preferably something that works on PC.

Celemony Melodyne has the ability to export audio to MIDI.

http://www.celemony.com

You can download demo versions of either the plug-in or the standalone program.

If there's more than one sound in the recording you're trying to steal stuff from, or it's a polyphonic track, or if there's a lot of reverb or whatever, you're out of luck. If you've got a bassline loop or a vocal track, you might be able to do it with melodyne, but it has to be a good recording before it works 'properly'.

What I do is make a loop of it and play along on a keyboard till I get it right or rightish.

Or slow down the tempo of that loop with timestrech to triple tempo or something..then you can listen to it quite clear and play it back with your bass..

good luck

you could also try Widi audio..
and its definatly possible to work with such programs like widi or melodyne..cause all those notes that due to reverb delay or whatever mostly got very low velocity in the exported midi file..so you can recognize them...just delete them..its a lot of work actualy but you can get quite closed to the original..

I haven't upgraded to 7 yet but isn't the slice to midi track for chopping up loops & adding them to the drum rack?
