Recording Audio Playback on Windows?

Post by murm » Tue Feb 12, 2008 7:31 am

So, I'm playing back some youtube videos or pretty much anything else and I want to record that to a WAV for including in my compositions. How do I do this simple thing in Windows? I know that for Mac its pretty easy to do.

Audacity can definitely record your output.

I've just tried it. It takes a bit of fiddling around (at least it did for me)

You need to goto start>control panel>sounds>volume tab>advanced

options>properties>recording.

Make sure stereo mix is ticked in your internal (I couldn't get it to work with my US122) soundcard.

Bring the volume control of Stereo mix right down just to be safe.

Set the recording input of Audacity to your internal soundcard.

It should now record what is coming out of your stereo mix.

I hope this helps.

Virtual Audio Cable (VAC)
Ableton’s engineers are hard
at work developing code that will allow our software to predict the future, but we don’t
anticipate having this available until at least the next major release.

this depends on your sound card and your drivers...most of the time, the MME driver will allow applications to record the output, so Audacity is one good option.

Now sure how to do this on a Mac.

Also, I've never had very good luck with VAC.
