I think he back asap to turntables......
I plain back soon....i really miss the turntables, after 3 years playing with MIDI controllers, my own project monotouchlive, i just can say i missed a lot the turntables......
I testing Deckadance plugin and work really good, i cant imagine direct support for time codevinyl from Ableton.
Please do it guys
NOTE: i miis the truntables, but i never leave the power of ABLETON! : )

I dont think paul v d is going back to turntables any time soon.
i also think, hardly anybody has a use for turntables nowadays. all the young kids on the seen right now.
the 18 year old boys and what not, they all have laptops, and vast and huge collections of ripped off Mp3s...
its pretty pathetic. i personally, would like to move away from djing alltogether into flat out, just
creating ever sound and motif, and melody live and on the fly.
but I have to buy some hardware to do it. its difficult to interface with soft synths like that...
still, LIve is the best program for what I eventually see myself doing. and its kinda what paul v d is allready doing, however I am not sure how much he is on the fly creating, and how much he is flat out remixing.
cheers

Yes its real, turntable can be compared with dinosaurs.......
At this days Turntables its just a ICON....but i really love play with turntables.
About original music composed in ableton, i just comment not everybody can compose music.....
When i play on clubs, i play music from other artist, i make lot of mashups, and combine few tunes i created... for that scenario i think turntables are good.
I play usually 4 to 6 hours......i think people no want listen 4 or 6 hours of my productions jijiji.........and i not have tunes created myself can cover all that time, and i really not plain do that.
For the DJ scenario i think turntable is valid..........dont know if understand what i try express.
Young guys djing not really intersted on turntables.....god turntables are expensive, and not portables......use with final or serato torq etc etc add more cost to setup, and all young guys really no want and usually cant spend lot of money and really no want learn to beatmixing with turntables......all my youngs friend djs, just use laptop with traktor, ableton or virtual dj sofwtare on laptops and use all time SYNC for beatmixing 2 tracks.... that is valid......but i have 33 years old and start play with truntabels long tme ago when i just have 12 years, for me turntable is part of my life, i just leave the truntables for 3 years due i discover ableton and fell transform all my sets on unique sets,.
I discover ableton 3 years ago, and at that moment no exist simple way to combine ableton + turntable
Now i ordered KORG ZERO 8, that mixer + ableton + decadance plugin make all the combination very simple.
I just think timecode implemented on ableton can be absolutly good for dj scenarios...... i know timecode vinyl under production scenario with abelton really cant be usefull.
I really miss turntables jiji
Sorry for my bad english......
NOTE: i no want ofend to any younf boy beatmixing with sotware and using sync features or warping.....i think all is valid for make people dance !
Bets regards.

yes I see the young guys do this all the time. and it makes for a shit mix. Its very cool to go out and really mix vinyl now. fewer and fewer actually take the months it takes to learn to beat match.Dj-Grobe wrote: use all time SYNC for beatmixing 2 tracks.... t

What I want is a computer controllers that includes a spinning deck - CDJ platter kind of size maybe...
Something with some weight and 'directness' about it. I really just dont get on with these disconected jog wheel type things...
I guess it wouldnt be so bad if they had some weight to them and were consistent - ie ie a 1/4 turn one way, half turn back, 1/4 forward again woud stick you exactly in the same place again rather than somewhere random... - Grrrr!
BTW - I have never actually used CDJ-1000s - are those simple control platters, or do those platters actually behave with a regular deck - ie spin so you can nudge/hold them normally and allow precise cueing etc?

Nothing to see here - move along!
seriously.. People cant beat match anymore?? No scratching, no beat matching... Where is the world going to>? if you cant do basic beatmatching and a baby scratch, youre no dj to me. I only have Finla Scratch to scratch my own sounds. I have never spinned the wheels with MP3' s and a MIDI controller, that would be awkward. People these days..... You should save up for turntables and practice until you can go play

Isn't that like saying you have to master the lute before you can play electric guitar?Yhtomit wrote:seriously.. People cant beat match anymore?? No scratching, no beat matching... Yeah, that's what I'm waiting for, too (along with Ableton to be controllable with it!) I think one important thing about the turntable is the resistance that it gives - its just right.Khazul wrote:What I want is a computer controllers that includes a spinning deck - CDJ platter kind of size maybe...

This thing looks cool but it will probably be a few generations before it really gets good:

Beatmixing gives a sensibility to the mix - its like you have to concentrate on keeping your balance, so you pay more attention. I think its important to at least have the experience of that.
Analagously, I spend a lot of the time doing CAD drawings- but I learned to draft first with a pencil, and then pens, and I am convinced that any reputable school will use these outmoded methods to teach the disciplne. It gives a directness of understanding that is not replacable by the much more abstracted digital environment. The difference is between being educated to create (designer), or being taught to operate a machine (technician).
Remember that most of the 20 year olds with Traktor on their laptops today will not be doing it anymore when they are 30. Those who are, I'd be very surprised if the lion's share hadn't at some point dipped into traditional DJing techniques.

Yes, it is.noisetonepause wrote:Isn't that like saying you have to master the lute before you can play electric guitar?Yhtomit wrote:seriously.. People cant beat match anymore?? But I'd suspect that as one develops an interest in the electric guitar, one would eventually move on to the acoustic, and then to other forms of stringed instruments. It doesn't have to be a linear relationship- but I have yet to touch anything besides a record that REALLY feels right for the scratch action.
For a long time I thought that eventually I'd press my own sounds onto records one day (for personal use). And now technology has made that entirely unnecessary and considerably cheaper - I am quite happy about that.
Those are very good analogies.chrysalis33rpm wrote:Khazul wrote:

techniques.
I learnt to mix on turntables, and have used most systems since, from ableton to traktor to Torq. I found altho ableton is great for the whole mash up thing, sometimes you just want to mix two track end to end, and when you do that its boring and you dont get into it enough. When you are balancing the two tracks you get into it much more and construct better sets as a result.
I'm now using Torq, rewired to Ableton sometimes for really crazy stuff.
As for tt control Torq 1.5 which is out soon will output MIDI clock so could potentially be used to control ableton from a turntable/cdj.
I know what you mean about these young DJs, I see so many kids who have just bought a MacBook and cracked Traktor, sure the auto beatmatching works OK but when it goes wrong they dont know how to correct it and the result is horrendous... not to mention the horrendous quality of most people's stolen mp3 collections...
One guy I spoke to the other day didn't even realise it was possible to listen to tracks before you play them on a laptop. Most of them just use the headphone socket, start a second track playing in the mix and hope for the best!

I, like some of the responders here am also waiting for an easy way to control scratch effects live, with decent hardware, within Live. I realize that some scratching techniques will be different to reproduce, but for most "effect" scratching it would prabaly be sufficient (as serrato is now). Bring fort the turntablists and real DJs who say "but you can't be a turntablist without turntables" and I say "That's exactly it, I don't want to become a turntablist, I simply have scratches in my head for remixes that I'd like to do in a certain fashion, please give me the tools for it, thank you"
Last year at the Musikmesse in Frankfurt I talked to some gear producers and they said "we're thinking about developing stuff like that but it's all in an early stage yet" so seamless integration with Ableton is a thing that we won't seeing in the near and medium future I fear. It would be cool to scratch clips directly though. I'd buy (reasonably priced) ecuipment for that.

And its not only the beatmatching but its the quest to vinyl as well.... I used to spend weeks and weeks trying to find that ONE record I wanted (even years) Nowadays you order a CD album or go download some MP3 stuff from wares sites and iTunes. Hence the lazyness. Its the same with producing. Some people are always on the lookout for updates for their software. Recently there was a topic from a guy here who was waiting for 2008 software updates. Cmon..!!?? Do you make music?

Amen, brother.
I grew up with the phonograph. These days, a pair of Technics 1200s run upwards of $1,000. And they weigh 26½ lbs. (12kg) apiece. Not to mention lugging around the extra weight of all those records in a milk crate.
As with all technology - something's gained and something's lost. But, I still love watching the needle hit the groove...
