seperate input & output buffer?

is it possible to seperate input and output in terms of latency in relation to the buffer? I dont mind the output latency but I need a low input to be able to record audio samples in real time.

Have I got the wrong end of the stick here?

For most sound card drivers the input and output buffers are adjustable, but forced to be the same size. Have you dug around all the usual latency-reducing threads? (For PC: ASIO, ASIO4all, etc)
