vista VST compatibility
I'm trying to decide between Vista and XP for my new laptop.
My soundcard and keyboard are supported on Vista, driver-wise, so I don't care about anyone else's hardware woes.
What I do care about is testing VST compatibility.
I use old freeware like Triangle and Synth1 and some synths that are unsupported by their vendors, and I don't want to give them up.
On the other hand, Vista lets me get more memory and this TurboCache (some kind of flash memory hard drive cache: 1GB for $39) thing that looks really good.
Anyone found VSTs that don't run on Vista?

or go dualboot like me, and have a complete OS just for music that is kept tight and clean. I do that with vista 64bit and xp (yes 64bit vista, no trouble with my vst's whatsoever. besides most updated vst's will be updated if they got trouble with vista)
but that said, i still find xp just that tad more responsive. that might be due to vista having some trouble with file handling and i think it seems a bit slow at that point, at least with calculating the times. might just be me

No dual boot for me, no time for anything except tuning the OS that the vendor provides. Besides, I have other computers (mostly Linux) for general purpose computing.thefool wrote:or go dualboot like me, and have a complete OS just for music that is kept tight and clean. I'm worried mostly about freeware and unsupported or discontinued VSTs that won't ever get updated.
If you get a chance, could you list your "known working with Vista" VSTs?

I know my hardware works with Vista, so I'm OK there.thefool wrote:I had 0 troubles with my vst's at vista, but trouble with the audio interface so i shifted back to xp.
If you get a chance, could you list the VSTs that you tried under Vista and what version of Vista you used?

Do you mean the SP1 that is forthcoming?blank wrote:There is a lot of thing that doesn't work with vista yet.
I suggest you to wait for the next service pack.
What programs/plugins have you had specific trouble with?
I only need Ableton, Automap, and my plugins to work.
That's it.
No AV, no browser, no email, no graphics, no movies, no CD burning, no Skype, no IM, no Power Management, not even networking, nothing but read from a CD, run Live and output audio.

There is a lot of performances/stability issues related to vista, what I say is even if all your stuff is vista compliant you will have performances problems or loss anyway. I tested vista performances a lot for work and it stills some kind of not ready for now. For painass free production go xp sp2 and up.djastroboy wrote:Do you mean the SP1 that is forthcoming?blank wrote:There is a lot of thing that doesn't work with vista yet.

Maybe you can go dualboot if you really want to use vista. I have no solid opinion about vista yet, I'm not telling you it's a piece of krap, in fact I think this os have a great future. Just keep in mind it tooks a while for xp to be stable and reliable like it is now so it will prolly take around the same amount of time for vista.

Good for you, can you post your hardware/software specs ?Mike Goodwin wrote:I have had zero problems with vista. It is fast and stable on my laptop. I have not had problems using my Mackie D4 with it even though it is not officialy supported. I thought it was going to suck and it has been great. I look forward to upgrading my full studio setup in a year or so.
I'm just a bit curious.

Same here. All VSTs that I have that worked under XP also work under Vista.thefool wrote:I had 0 troubles with my vst's at vista,
Live 7 can even open up my old Live 6 files from my XP machine no problem... every VST goes where it should and sounds like it should.
I made sure my soundcard (Presonus Firepod) had good Vista drivers first, tho.

My laptop is a Toshiba A200, bought from Futureshop here in Canada for $800 bucks. It is a Intel core2 Duo 1.67 with two gigs of ram and a 160Gig hard drive. It has been a great laptop so far.blank wrote:Good for you, can you post your hardware/software specs ?Mike Goodwin wrote:I have had zero problems with vista. It is fast and stable on my laptop.
