Can you or can you NOT consolidate a section in arrange view to create a new clip intended for use in session view, with the automation data in arrange view now embedded in the clip envelope/session view?

...no... the automation in arrange is not like a 'clip envelope' ...
for one it's absolute values...
where clip envelopes are relative to the position of the knob/fader...
and second... it's tied to the arrange timeline

i don't see how that would matter, automation values are automation vales, whether they are relative or static, 40% wet is 40% wet when it comes time to convert to clip envelope- the values are there. wouldn't affect the intended purpose at all, but I suppose this functionality has not been implemented yet, hopefully for Live 8.

if you're on 40% wet....
then 40% 'clip envelope' would mean 16% wet

I reckognize that, I'm saying that in theory the conversion wouldn't be hard to perform

There's no way Ableton could do this without making old sets explode

I've said it before, the clip envelope section needs an absolute/relative button

go consolidate some audio, some with arrange automation, and some with clip envelopes on volume and transpose and such, and then see exactly what you can and cannot consolidate.

and drag your clips back to session.

testing things is a great way to see how they react.
