How do I make an audio track trigger a midi track?

Post by akajt » Wed May 14, 2008 1:40 pm

I have an acoustic snare track that is not very good. I've done what I can to gate out the hat bleed, eq and compression, but the snare still sounds pathetic. So, I'm wondering: can I use the output of that snare track to activate a midi track that contains a sampled snare? I've attempted to set a gate with a sidechain, but to no avail. Anyone ever try this? Thanks...

I use KT Drum Trigger for firing video and lighting clips and scenes.

Simple, and works great!

yeah - KT is great - it took me a bit of tweaking to get it working the first time i used it, but works really well and with really low latency.

anyone know of any others?

OK, stupid question. How to install KTDrumTrigger? I downloaded it, and placed the results in the VST system folder, but nothing shows up in Live???

hmm - maybe rescan the vst folder / put it in your "custom vst" folder?

I wonder, is it incompatible with my setup? I'm on a macbook pro using live 7.0.2.
BTW, apTrigga works well!

Here's my answer directly from Koen:
Hi James,
sorry, but there is no VST version currently that runs on Intel-based Macs...
I do still have the plan to build one, but it's not gonna be for soon I'm afraid...
Koen Tanghe - Smartelectronix

I then asked about the AU possibility, and he replied:
Well, the problem with AU was that there was no support for AU plugins to send out MIDI (VST has always had that). That may have changed now (it probably has), so I should really try to find some time to look into it... I wish days on earth lasted about 27 hours instead of just 24 ;-)
Best,
Koen

Very cool guy, I appreciated that he took the time to answer. Too bad it didn't work out. However, the apTrigga previously mentioned works fabulously, and there are some very cool free plugins on their site so check them out. Thanks for the help!

aptrigga and KTdrumtrigger are great, and very easy to use.

Also, for VERY good triggering, check out "drumagog". I've heard really amazing stuff done that way.
