help w/"gate effect"

Post by Jekblad » Sat Jun 07, 2008 4:38 am

can someone run down how to set up a gate effect in Live?

As in, when i press down a key I hear that channel, but when i release it the channel is muted.

It doesn't have to use the channel mute itself, just want to hear the right effect.

I went down that road, couldn't get it to fly.

Need to send midi to the plugin, didn't know how to set that up in live. They had another plug to send midi to their plugs, but it was for os 9.

Setup one channel with a basic synth sound (Analog or Simpler), make it loud with short attack, decay, release and full sustain. Set this channel to midi in from your keyboard. Mute the track output.

Setup a second channel with the material you want gated. Put the gate on here. Set it to sidechain with the audio in from your first track. Attenuation to -inf db.

Or just download this Live set.

Awesome!! And I could use dummy clips then too right, if I justwanted it to play outright?

Then when I want to play the mutes I just stop the clip with the sustained note.

I appreciate your help very much, it seems so much harder solving my own 'problems' with Live than helping other people. So thank you for spending the time to hook me up.

Got any beat juggling tips in there? :-)

Just make nifty 1/64th note patterns on the first track. For instant glitch-a-roo!

I don't even know what beat juggling is. :?

Are we talking mixing gating or "trance gating"?

What i wanted to do was fire a drum loop, and then play the mute to alter the beat. So whatever i tap out happens, (provided there's a hit there)

The side chain thing will totally get this done.
