Digital Performer 6 is out!

Not too many users here, but IMO DP6 is looking even more like the most logical choice in grandfather DAW to compliment Live: bounce virtual instruments to audio tracks in place, Song window basically allows you to have a one hour set that's easily re-arranged, audio editing is better than Logic, and on par with Pro Tools, convolution reverb, mater limiter/compressor etc.
Another selling point, the quantize features in DP are far superior to Logic or Live, and input quantize is what it sez it is, kind of like Session View Quantize on clips or scenes, really pretty cool.
I have a copy of DP5 lying around, probably going to upgrade, and maybe ditch Logic for a DAW that compliments Live, instead of tries to emulate it.

I've always been a big fan of DPs humanize function. Might consider getting DP6 if the student discount is big enough.

How do you come to this conclusion.
I use both Live and Logic and i have to say i'm hard pressed to see how either one is trying to emulate the other

Hey valid question for sure. Long answer coming back at you, sorry. FWIW I still use Logic more than DP 5, I'm just stoked that 6 seems to fix the things that kept me from diving in full stream: AIFF,WAV,SDII etc. support without converting to SDII (which is just odd in 08 IMO), plus vertical zooming in the overview window (for bulk editing), and some other things like improved CPU performance make it VERY tempting.

The comment above was a jab at Logic 8 getting "subwindows" like Live, and also like DPs Consolidated Windows, and a reference to the fact that of the main old school major DAWs (DP, Logic, Pro Tools, Sonar, Cubase), Logic is probably the clunkiest in audio editing. Hell they threw in Soundtrack Pro with Studio because it was so common for people to use Soundtrack Pro to edit audio over Logic, which to this day still cannot apply FX to audio in the sample edit window.
I'm not sure what you're workflow is like with Logic and Live, but i tend to end up with a situation where I have 11-20 audio tracks bounced as separate files that I import into Live. When it comes to rearranging the song, I'm setting warp markers, and copying the same audio file to 8-24 Session clips to have it start at different places in the song.
With Digital Performer, the audio is imported into Live as clips. You can do this in Logic, but it's much harder to do than in DP. In 6, it looks like you can bounce a VI and have DP create a track, and set the audio you bounced in the sequence at the exact place that the VI is. I'm not sure if it then mutes the VI, but it does all the other annoying busy work for you, so I wouldn't be surprised.
The Song Window in DP is a place where you can arrange entire sequences quickly, it's built around the idea of long pieces, as in movie soundtracks and live performance. Instead of a separate application that does not Rewire (Mainstage), DP offers VI Racks which are basically a way to hold all the instrument from all your sequences (DP calls songs, sequences, annoying, but hey 'objects' in Logic etc.). so with a little thought you can set up an entire set in DP, with all your instruments enabled and ready to go.
What I meant was with Logic, it's really about Logic, the original way you ReWired in Logic was a great example, it's better now, but the solution to live performance Logic Studio offerers is Mainstage, which does not ReWire, or hold audio tracks.
Now I suppose in a live setting you could use a third party solution like Jack Tools or Soundflower to capture your performance with Live and Mainstage, or you could use folders to set up a set in Logic etc. but it's just not as elegant as what DP offers, or as complimentary to other DAWs etc.

Basically Logic is a closed system to a degree, it offers you everything you need, and Apple aren't really that worried about making importing to Pro Tools or Live etc. that elegant, and it seems to me that Digital Performer is.
