Sampling à la Slipknot

hey guys,

I was at a rehearsal from a metal band that is pretty brutal and I thought samples would benefit their music. They were excited about it and now we are gonna try to work that out.
I'm thinking strident voices, ghostly sounds, very dark atmospheric stuff would be ideal, as you can hear in Slipknot's stuff. I would also like to play live with them and manipulate the main parameters during the show. Only triggering samples wouldn't be so great. I'd like to improvise here and there.
So I'm on PC with a lovely MPD24 and I have tried for the third time Sampler in demo mode and I'm still not really liking it. I demoed once Kontakt, but it's a bit too much for my needs and I don't need that garguantuesque (spelled right?

) soundlibrary.
So do you have other recommendations for a sampler that fits my needs? Or is Sampler a good option?

Ableton live + Macbook + Interface + PA = gg.

and using the pads to trigger scenes and the knobs for effect chain?
Or trigger midi sequences in scenes and use the knobs for tweaking a VST synth?
Or putting the samples in simpler?

Just throwing some options at you.

Why do you want to use a sampler plugin?
Could you shed some more light on what you want to do?

Of course I can trigger scenes and use Beatrepeat/Filter or whatever on the send channels ( I dj with Live so I know that), but it's more like for example you have a scream that lasts 3 sec. With Sampler (simpler too) you can cut the loop lenght and it goes shorter and shorter until it sounds like a robot. I can record that as a clip and play trigger it ok, but I'd would like to do that on the fly and I haven't been able to midi map sampler. Is that maybe because I'm n demo mode? And further I'd would like to midi map the filter, etc.

Edit: Actually it's only the loop parameters tat I don't know how to midi map.

Yeah, i know my suggestions were pretty obvious, but as long as it would work, who cares.

just tried sampler in demo mode and i can't do it either. I can map all but the parameters on the sample page (except 2).

So that leaves simpler...
You can do it in clips but not very short samples.

just for inspiration you should check out these bands:

chimaira, dagoba, fear factory, mnemic, bleed the sky (1st album), strapping young lad, textures etc..

they´ve all got really cool samples and synths in their songs.

For stuff like that an old band I was in used a Boss Dr. Sample SP202 to great effect. Plenty of options for mangling sound but simple enough to keep you focused and the interface is great - you always know what you are pressing.

1. So it seems that these parameters are not assignable then?!! How weird that the Abes implement that in Simpler and not in Sampler!
2. Thx for the bands heads-up. I'll give them a listen.
3. Just googled the Boss sampler, it looks old-school +1 for style

Anyways I'll start crafting some psycho-samples and load them into clips as a first step.

The best metal band for wild use of samples is definately white zombie, check them out and you'll be on your way. Watch lots of old hammer horror, and splatter movies and you should come up with some ace samples. also see low budget horror. You can find great samples such as "Before they are born.... Babies are the ultimate parisite" as spoken by Harold Bishop from australian soap Neighbours in the film 'Body Melt'.

lol i still have a dr sample sp202 hehe
i used to use it like 10 years ago.. i used it live and i used it as my main production/practice/jam tool .. that and a tascam 4 track lol....

i let my drummer borrow it to use it for DJ'ing like 4 years ago... he just moved in next door so i got it back..i hooked it up and man does that thing suck lol.
i used to think it was so great
so know it just sits on top of a concert mate collecting dust... hehe

o by the way have you checked out battery?
it may do the trick.
and it can run stand alone or as a vst

MPD24 + Battery 3 (in StandAlone mode) = Good Times.

Once you've got prepared samples, you'll be laughing.

The funny thing is I sold my Trigger Finger and I bought an MPD24 bundled with Battery3 about 2 weeks ago. Since then I have only used the MPD and left Battery on the side. NOW I've opened it and it's the bomb. Jesuus the kits inside this beast are WOWWWW. And battery is actually a sampler of its own! How stupid can one be. I'm looking for something and I already have it under my nose.
