elektron workflow with live

Post by dj superflat » Tue Jul 01, 2008 6:08 pm

wondering how others set things up to use machinedrum and/or monomachine with live. thus far, i largely just set tempos same on all, cut loops imprecisely by hand (i like the somewhat raggedy feel). i'm sure there are fascinating recursive possibilities using the UW to sample live from the inputs, then have live sample in turn, but i'm not particularly up to speed on the UW yet. (the main reason i move things into live currently is not only to add vocals and guitar, but to be able to use beat repeat and other randomizer fx (my only complaint about elektron is the lack of randomization).)

(taps foot impatiently waiting for tarekith to weigh in.)

I don't have the UW version, but what I do is MIDI slave the Machinedrum to Live (there is a little delay) on a MIDI track with External Instrument plug-in. Jam out and then record to an Audio track if I like it.

same here. quite basic harddisk recording.

but, what i love to do is to load a midi cntrl machine into the MD and assign knobs to various parameters in Live and/or plugins
(lately i had real pleasure to control the read position of the GRM Freezer plugin).

Then, after assigning, i make a stepsequence on the MD and lock different values of the parameters - instant "parameter stepsequencing".
This compensates the lack of direct parameter recording in live's session view a bit.

Great fun to tweak parameters this way due to the MD's workflow. you have an "all parameter" stepsequencer at your fingertips.

so many things to discover on the md..........love it :-)

Man, what a great idea. I've never thought about doing that before. Nice one!

wow. the step sequencer thing i like (would rather do stuff like that via MD than in live via clips or whatever).

but seems like no one's really using the UW for resampling stuff (i don't really even get how to use the UW for external inputs, though it can do some interesting resampling the MD).

I am. Routing a stereo channel from live to my MDUW. That way, I can use the ram-machines in the UW like beat-repeats on serious steroids!! You can get some really nice strange loops and sequence going that way.
Live + M4L, MacBookPro & Ultralite mk3. Plugins from Softube, Soundtoys, Eventide, 2CAudio, Cytomic, AudioDamage, OhmForce, FabFilter, SonicCharge, Waves, MadronaLabs, NI and ExpertSleepers. Oh, and a bunch of hardware... =D

So, how do you all deal with recording the MD in Live? Do you record several tracks at a time (kick, snare, hat, etc.) or just make stereo loops? It seems sort of like a pain to make a bunch of individual tracks, but for mixing, I can't see how else you would do it.

normally, i record stereo loops into the arrangement or as clip in session view as the
track develops. for later mixdown the parts which make sense get seperated into single tracks.

depending on the number of inputs your soundcard has to offer, you can record the seperate tracks simultanously. no prob.

just saw this thread and the OP's need for randomization....
you guys know this machinedrum editor ?

it has quite diverse randomization and parametermorphing features. also saving
kits it's pure ease with it.
Grab it here, it's freeware : http://www.bl-project.com/Ivity.html
