smooth midi control

hi all, I'm a fairly new user but here's my problem...

When I assign MIDI control to, say, an EQ knob or a fader, it is usually pretty smooth, ie when the hardware knob is at zero, the corresponding fader is at zero and when the fader is at 127 so is the knob. However some things that I assign appear to be 'jumping' very quickly and not using the entire knob (if you know what I mean).

This means that rather than the EQ being smooth, t jumps from 0 to 127 and back, as if the controller was a switch rather than a pot... I'm sure this is a very simple prob but I can't seem to figure it out.

Oh did I mention I have a gig in 8 hours.... gulp!
