The Elusive Great MIDI Controller

Post by Matsuo » Sun Jul 06, 2008 5:22 am

The knobs are too close together, not enough, dont light up, poor qualitym, etc

The faders are toys, dont light up, too short, fat, long, etc.

The box doesnt respond to X, Y, Z the way I want.

No keyboard. Has keyboard.

Doesnt make waffles and overall fails to help me achieve self-actualization...
The Monome seems like a well made, well thought out midi controller if you only want buttons and if the planets align and they actually have one in stock for more than 500 milliseconds.

The Lemure seems neat but way too expensive and lets face it, a touch screen is useful from a flexibility standpoint but real knobs/sliders/keys are more fun.

The Faderfox boxes seem ok until you realize they use old MIDI connectors over USB and require batteries or a power cord.

The Nocturn seems ok but dreadfully short on controls and perhaps build quality.

When is a company going to produce a well thought out and high quality MIDI controller or set of MIDI controllers?

I would pay top dollar for a top of the line MIDI controller. At this point I would be satisfied with a Monome button box, knob box, and fader box.

If Ableton released high quality boxes for their various instruments I would buy them in a heartbeat. I would pay 499 just for a dedicated hardware interface to Operator...

If you want it done right you probably have to make one yourself, or pay someone to make one for you...

What is wrong with the faderfox? 9 out of 10 times there will be an available MIDI port on your soundcard or other controllers. And the batteries are good for about 18 months. Only had to change the batteries once on an LX1 in the last 4 years.
Even a BCR wont live that long...

Yeah I'm looking forward to how that turns out...
If they are 100$ each (or less hopefully) and the supply is great enough, it will be excellent!

I've been thinking about making my own.

Any links to sites related to DIY MIDI?

diy midi: www.ucapps.de - the "Midibox" project is the current flagship of diy.

reg. the other posted links: there's a vapour-ware link that has been floating around for months (machinecollective.org) or is clearly a personal project that would need to be done all over if commercialized (http://www.flickr.com/photos/fibra/2233 ... 784071855/ /// http://createdigitalmusic.com/2008/07/0 ... #more-3620 )

erhm, is there a functional prototype? Until then it's very much vapourware, I'm afraid.
mbp 2.66, osx 10.6.8, 8GB ram.

Yes, i'm building 3 units for testing. Here's why it may look vaporware: the parts takes very long time to get from the suppliers or manufacturers. First, we try to get a sample and then we proceed with a small order that cost a lot. Then we get another option from another supplier or manufacturer, then we order a new sample, take weeks or months! again and again. There is also the design of the PCB, you don't do this in a day, takes weeks, months. Sheet metal design, another time consuming process and then the style, the look that will change all, we start over again. :-)

It all began last year with this weird idea:

what we also need to improve things is a touchpad, or built-in mouse on a midi controller so u dont hav to touch ur pc's keyboard and mouse. simple idea, ive seen some new synths (think it was a new yamaha synth) which has this. that or a track ball. its true, most controllers seem to have s ome major drawback, either - not enuff knobs, too many buttons, not enough faders, too many faders, too cheap, too expensive. its very cool how ppl r building controllers, but the average joe. obviously, theres sooo much software out there to control, clearly its impossible for everyone to b happy.

The Novation Remote Zero SL looks perfect for me. I just haven't had a reason to pick it up because I haven't been doing much electronic music lately:
