DJing Live + 'timecode DJ DJ software set-up'

Post by SWAN808 » Sun Aug 10, 2008 11:15 pm

I recently started to DJ with Live 6 - however I'll admit that due to my organisational nature - Im finding myself pre-arranging my mix sets as clips in Live and now DJing doesnt seem as interesting...however I do love these things about Live:

Looping track sections to mix out of
Dropping acapellas in perfect sync and not having to mix them
Using FX such as Beat repeat.

Now in an idea world I would mix my main 2 tunes with timecode vinyl but use Ableton for FX and acapellas....

Is this possible on the same Mac? Can you do it so Ableton would sync to your main DJ tracks as you mix them?

If so how?

Deckadanse VST in ABleton? - WOuld that be in sync?...

This concept is confusing me a little!

there are a few ways of syncing everything but you need to be more specific about your setup.

how many laptops?
what software?
Stick... to the B.E.A.T , get ready to ignite

there are many ways of doing this as they said above.
do you have a midi clock able device.
what program are you using with control records/discs.
how fast is your computer, etc.
Stuff I actually use.
sound card, speakers, mic, MBP, Mighty Mouse, Ableton, Reason, iPad, iPhone,Touchable, Rebirth, & other apps.
Pair of Technics 1200's, and a Pioneer Mixer

not sure people are understanding this - Im asking 'what is a way to do this'...

If there are many please discuss one. Like I said I want to do it on my Macbook (2G DC) and use a Timecoded DJ software SUCH AS TRAKTOR OR DECKADANCE. Im wondering which might work best as I have Live but have not got the DJ software yet...

Please recommend

the setup depends alot on what software and hardware you elect to go with; or i should say, how you plan to approach this hybrid system. It's kind of like math; 3+2=5; 4+1=5; 6-1=5, 5*1=5. in other words there are several ways to achive the same answer (to an extent).
here's one example and my current set up.

serato laptop #1 - from my decks into mixer and then to a midi-clock (this is the master)
midi clock to laptop #2 ableton in slave mode.

you can even run this into a channel inside ableton (depending on your sound card.)

the setup / route you choose to go with depends alot on what gear you already have, what kind of functionality you want, and how much $$$ you plan on spending if you don't have the right gear to do what you want.

i myself, currently use 2 pc's and all the gear you see below in my live setup. (it was the most efficient work around for me)

there are many threads on this type of integration and how others achieve this.
search on the xone 3D/4D. pioneer 800, korg zero series
Stuff I actually use.

thanks

Is there any way The DJ Mixing software such as Traktor/Deckadance/Serato can send MIDI clock to Ableton within the same Laptop? For Example a neat solution might be to use Deckadance as a VSTi in Ableton, but have the main tempo coming from Dackadance. That may not be possible due to the fact that Deckadance would be a VSTi rather than seperate program....

Can it be as simple as using MIDI clock from DJ Software to Ableton within the same computer?

I own a Fireface 400...8 ins 8 outs....

EDIT:

Found the answer I was looking for:

you may want to look at torq, or ms pinky too, or if you wanna scratch... ammobox may be to your liking.
like i said, there are many different ways to achieve a "midi sync" with ableton. it depends alot on what exactly you want to do other than synch.
do you wanna run the music thru ableton for effects use, directly out to mixer for just synching. There are so many options now days with the way technology is taking off.
you may wanna check with the peeps on the ableton live dj forum.
that site is a little more geard toward djing with live, hence the name.
best of luck.
i just wish serato had vst support.
IMO it is the most stable and top performing time coded vinyl program out there.
