LCD HDTV as Monitor?

Post by Incy » Wed Oct 01, 2008 6:24 pm

Who uses a 'big' LCD HDTV as a monitor for their pc, 32"...37"... Issues with visual latency? How's it look with Live? Who has a screenshot for me?

you could probably get away with taking your laptop to a store and plugging it into screens there.

Yes I've hooked up my Macbook Pro to a Samsung flat-screen which has a DVI input, so you'll need one of those.

In all seriousness, even HDTVs have a resolution of 1080. Most regular monitors will have higher resolutions. So the screen may be big, but you won't get to put a lot of info in your screen. Better to get a 24inch computer monitor that has a screen res of 1900x1200.

I use a 42" Westinghouse as a monitor, it's bad-fucking-ass.. Also good to have a small one if you want to work desktop style.. very good to have options if you put long hours in behind the screen - it helps with ergonomics and fatigue.

I don't know how you do things down in Texas, but in these parts 1080 resolution means 1920 x 1080. Pretty much the same as 1900x1200.

I have a 40 inch sony lcd as my monitor and it works great! First thing people say when they come in the room is, "Is your monitor big enough?" Seems big at first but you get used to it fast.

game mode, yes, that's exactly what my concern is; are they all the same or are some brands or options distinctly better. i'm checking my options.

thanks for the quick replies!

It's always a case of check what the TV is capable of first. My 40" TV (Sony also) can do 1080p, and the specs say the panel is 1980x1080. However the highest resolution it can accept from a PC over VGA is 1366x768. So my 20" LCD monitor kicks it's ass :-)

I had my Mac Pro hooked up to a 40" Samsung 1080p LCD (as a 2nd display) using a DVI-to-HDMI converter. The picture quality was decent. Obviously it looked better on my 20" Apple monitor, but to be fair, I never really took the time to adjust the color settings on the TV, so the display always looked a little off. I know most HDTVs have 'game mode' and many also have a 'pc mode' which may help with the color. Anyways, long story short, I don't use it anymore, because I don't NEED the second display, and I didn't think it warranted the display/refresh delay (8-12 seconds) that occurred every time I switched between input signals on my TV.

ok, it's already done. the new 37" works real nice, i can actually see the names of my files and clips. i got a cheapy, but i don't seem to regret it so far. no visual latency. i can see the pixels 1366x768 , because my face is less then 3 feet from the screen. i'll have to fix this. a separate stand behind the desk, likely.
