can't export video

Post by Benshik » Wed Oct 08, 2008 2:14 pm

hi,
live crashes EVERY TIME i try to export video. the project has variable tempo, could that be the problem? also, the video files, simple plain colour files changing every beat, can't even play back normally
this is VERY annoying. some people speculate that live 8 will have more video capabilities. man, they can't even get simple video playback right!!!

help?

ok after much frustration and around 30 crashes i finally could export a video file from live...
to do so, i had to go back to final cut, convert the HDV video file to some really small format: 320x240. only then, live could handle the task. wow

so live can't playback HDV???

btw, im on a mac pro 2.8 ghz quad core intel xeon, 4 gb ram, osx.5.4 running live 7.0.10 on a machine like that, any video format should fly!! live is the absolute worse program i ever seen for video playback. are you guys working on it? :) or is the jitter in the playback something intentional? is that part of a generative video art conspiracy?

I can't export video either ... same problem, a crash 100% of the time.

Unlike you, this function works perfectly on my little macbook (and for this reason I haven't yet contacted support about it). No stuttering playback either, and with reasonably large resolution video files

But on my way more powerful PC, there is absolutely no way to export video. In fact, even loading a set that contains video clips causes a crash so serious that I need to reboot the hard way

There are my 2 cents ... perhaps I should contact support

Hi,

the video playback/export is handled through Quicktime.
It´s impossible to make a comment here without having a look at your log.txt/crash log files. Please send the requested files to support@ableton.com

Thanks,

downloaded and installed the latest itunes/quicktime, and lo and behold, my video woes are gone :-) Excellent. I am a happy chappy.

OK, I know, that 'officially' I should contact support for problems, and I also know that computer problems are complex, and the solution to a particular problem is dependent on each users own particular operating environment, but at the same time, don't you guys at Ableton think it would be a good idea to make a sticky with...

'known issues + potential solutions'

something along the lines of ...

known issue:
live crashes when loading sets containing video, or when rendering video

potential solution:
make sure the latest versions of live and quicktime are installed. If the problem still occurs please contact support

OR ...

Known issue:
Live crashes randomly with a C++ runtime error message

potential solution:
make sure there are no disabled ethernet port on your system. If the problems persists, please contact support

I mean, put in a disclaimer, that 'these issues might not go away with the solutions provided, and in these cases, please contact support'.

I mean, don't the guys at support get sick of writing 'have you downloaded the latest version of quicktime ...

Just a thought ... thanks for the great software

Hi Craw,

thanks for your suggestions.

If you only knew....
I totally agree that it´d make a lot of sense in some cases.
Often though there is not only one possible reason for a problem.
If lists get a little longer they - unfortunately - tend to get ignored by a lot of users (speaking from my experience with the FAQ section).
Best,
