Fortunately, you can have several Live installations in separate folders.
I would suggest maintaining installations of at least the last 3-4 versions.
I've noticed "upgrades" frequently break previous functionality.
It's great to be at the bleeding edge of new features, but each new feature ...

you think only experts can answer questions? that's so freaking wrong. man up and start answering questions, so what if you're wrong, that's a GREAT way to learn. I do it all the time, there's no clearer way to know what you REALLY do and don't know.

Re: Anyone here use external sound modules??? VOL, PAN Control?
There's been loads of discussion about live's midi capabilities and timing,
some people are happy, but if you've grown up with midi in other daw's it's just not there yet.
Lots of hardware, but never tried controlling volume actually.
Probably because most of it is too old to understand that ...

Re: Best headphones for studio use. Low end important
Try taking a look at the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro. I haven't compared a lot, but these were recommended for low-end, usually one of the problems of mixing through headphones. Since I often have neighbors complaining about my music, I decided to fork over the $200 for these.

Anyone here use external sound modules??? VOL, PAN Control?
I've been having a bit of a go-round with the Ableton folks on this.
While Live is an awesome tool, no doubt about it I was a bit optimistic about controlling external MIDI hardware, real time via Live.
Sadly Live does not provide Vol or Pan controls on a MIDI track until an External Instrument is ...

Re: Piano Roll Beats and Bars...
The whole Live interface is due for an overhaul.
We're long past the days of sh1tty computers.
Some laptops have 1GB dedicated graphics cards.
Ableton .. you're already established .. you don't have to settle for sh1tty graphics anymore.

Re: MIDI Volume? Grouping?
I'm using the APC-40 as my control surface.
It does not yet provide a way to change it's internal mapping.
This is to say faders 1-8 do not correspond to MIDI VOLUME Channels 1-8 but rather some strange NRPN values.

Re: What soundcard to use with Ableton?
The Echo unit looks cool, but only 1 pair of of Stereo Outs. You should get at least 2 pairs.
I would also go for something USB powered.
Although there ware FW powered boxes, you have to be careful b/c most laptops only come with the smaller FW connectors which do NOT power the box, hence external ...

Re: MIDI Volume? Grouping?
This really just boils down to the fact that Ableton needs to put Pan & Volume controls directly on a Channel Strip -- aka "Track" (just like everybody else, software or hardware mixers).
Open up any major DAW and you have these controls. SONAR, Cubase, Logic, etc.
They map straight straight to ...

Re: Kinda Urgent Rig Question
If you don't want to spend the rest of your life warping tracks, then I suggest you use Tracktor to DJ.
Ableton is not very well suited to general DJ'ing.
It's also tedious and not a lot of fun as DJ'ing should be.

Re: MIDI Volume? Grouping?
OK ... clip envelopes is one step closer.
I'm able delete any automation(envelope) already in the "track" (clip) and then drag the horizontal line (no envelope) up and down with the mouse.
This is the effect I'm looking for.
Now .. how do I map a MIDI Controller to MIDI CC #7?
Thanks

GENERAL MIDI -- PLEASE!!
Dear Ableton,
Please provide support for General MIDI.
When previewing MIDI files, it seems to me that it should either connect to the GM sound module inherent in Windows/QuickTime.
Ideally speaking it would be great if somehow or another a GM/GM2 VSTi could be provided, something that works just ...

VOLUME/PAN Cntlrs FOR MIDI TRACKS --- PLEASE!! ( MIDI CC#7)
Dear Ableton,
I have been spending the past few days with one of your tech support people.
He's been very pleasant, but doesn't seem to grasp my problem.
I have recently spent $3K US building a Core i7 computer to run your software.
I am the owner of a $2K Access Virus TI and a $400 APC-40.

Re: MIDI Volume? Grouping?
Hi Hartford,
Thanks for your reply.
However, I have to say all of this business is totally f##ked and makes Ableton "Live" to control my $2K Access Virus TI completely useless.
MIDI as it was defined in the early 80's already defines MIDI Continuous Controller #7 = Volume.

Re: Audio Format Comparison help please
As far .wav is concerned, you should only think of these types of files as your recording masters, not for general distribution.
So if you're going to take your tracks to a CD duplicator, use the highest format that they support probably .wav 16-bit @ 44.1Khz (or 48.1Khz - I forget).
