I just take the track and group it by itself, move the sidechained effect to the "group," freeze the track, and then often just leave it that way so I know that that track is receiving a sidechain. Plus, then I have the option of unfreezing that track later if I decide I need to make some changes ...

Please go the the menu 'help' and select 'get support'. Please zip the project you see here with the project where you have the freeze reproduced and send it to [email protected].
With your described steps I am unfortunately still not able to reproduce the freeze.
