Lighting is just as visual as a movie and therefor the software should have that. You should have a virtual room or stage where you can graphically put your fixtures and program your show and watch your show on your monitor and sync it all to an audio track just like what you would do for movie ...

Search this forum for "DMX", and you'll find lots of messages from a chap called "hambone". He's an expert in using MIDI-DMX interfaces to control lighting rigs from within Ableton - I'm sure he'll be more than happy to help you.

There are also a couple of upcoming DMX lighting ...

MIDI-DMX interface boxes are the "lowest level" way to control a DMX lighting rig from Live. You basically use MIDI CC curves, clips & automation to control the DMX lighting channels one by one. It's perhaps not the most efficient way to program a light show, but Hambone - the resident expert here ...

MIDI-DMX boxes are great if you like getting your hands dirty with MIDI controllers. But they only provide low level control over the lights - you need to patch your DMX equipment manually, and build your own library of CC curves & special effects from scratch. It can be difficult if not impossible ...

You are mistaken though, DMX is 250k/sec. 512 channels * 8 bit's is about 4000k just to send 512 commands. Multiply that by a decent frame rate (say 40 frames a second).

It only uses HID(Human interface Driver) to connect to usb, as such the latency for 512 channels is about 2 seconds. So you can't move all your lights at ...
