I decided several years ago that Live would be my only music application and that I would automatically upgrade to new versions, which I justified by not spending money on apps I don't really use. Even so, I was underwhelmed by version 7 and waited a long time to upgrade. In retrospect that was a ...

I love the idea of recording a funky old piano. I want to record a prepared piano someday myself. You probably should get Sampler especially if you want velocity mapped samples. And if you have the extra cash, check out the sample mapping and editing programs at redmatica.com.

Midipipe might be able to help you. I've never used it but I've heard good things.

Midipipe is a versatile midi mapper so your one hardware knob could send multiple controller change messages simultaneously.

I had a lot of problems with my 1814. Sent it back, got a new one, not much help. Worked better on my PC than my Mac. Seems like their drivers are better for PC than Mac.

If you have time, wait until the model you want has the new generation of Intel chips - Core 2 Duo (aka Merom). Apparently they run cooler and draw less power.

Plug the preamp output straight into the computer soundcard input. This also has the advantage of eliminating unnecessary circuitry in the record input signal path.

Does it make sense to wait for the G5 powerbooks?

At least it is clear now there won't be G5 powerbooks any time soon.

And how fast would a G5 powerbook be, anyway? Apple's powerbooks are designed for light weight and long battery life. For serious Live usage, those things are not as important as speed and power.

Plus, we don't know when ...

While we all wait for the next generation Apple laptops, why not put together a <$1000 shuttle box Windows system? Small enough to be portable. Cheap enough to replace in a year or two. Able to run all those cool Windows-only apps and plugins.

Firewire 1814

On the Mac, the 1814 requires a G4 running faster than 800 Mhz, especially for a laptop.

To make iTunes ask you about deleting the file from the hard drive (send to recycle bin), you need to be browsing the library, not a playlist. Make sure the source, selected in the left pane is on a library not a playlist.
