I think the WASAPI layer is the one pro-audio guys will use - it's as close to the 'metal' as possible, without SRC etc. Perhaps ASIO will sit on it? That's what I got from that article and others about Vista's new audio.

Although, I wouldn't mind seeing more audio apps in C#. It's pretty platform-independent and actually can do a lot of very cool stuff.

That's the first time I've heard C# (a Microsoft language) described as 'cross platform' unless you are referring to Mono.

What cool stuff do you think C# can ...

Any audio apps should be in C++ or ASM.... anything else is too slow.

FL Studio is written with Delphi as are a number of VSTi - Delphi code is as fast as C/C++. Also Delphi has built in assembler. However, it's not available for Mac.

The code has to loop around grabbing incoming samples and ...

Ableton your sleezy!
Why should it be free? I'd say it's overpriced, but then I'm not terribly interested in another synth - especially one I can only use in Live.

Live doesn't have the Chords item on the menu that FL Studio does; however Live does have a Chord MIDI effect - you feed in midi notes and it outputs notes converted to a chord. Not quite the same, but useful.

Live handles stretching (warping) of audio clips better and automation clips. FL Studio seems to hide the automation - but then V5 may change all that.

Live seems to have a more intuitive VSTi/instrument handling but FL Studio comes with oodles of samples!

How do I route MIDI out from a VST instrument?

If I setup a VSTi on MIDI track 1, then on MIDI track 2, I can select MIDI track 1 as input. However, this doesn't get me the MIDI out of the VSTi, only the MIDI in on track 1. Is this possible in Live? I can see from the manual, audio routing is possible, but not MIDI?

Some VSTi have a MIDI out ...

I've got both, Live looks to me to have some advantages and some minor disadvantages.

I also have something called "Making Waves" which has a lot of features of Acid and Live, just not as intuitive or polished.

I'm not familiar with all the features of Acid and Live, so I may muddle up the naming ...
