Hmm, apparently I need to click the 'Back to Arrangement' button.
I don't understand what this button really does or why it is necessary...

Can't record free MIDI
Ultimately I want to be able to launch a loop in one track, free improvise on some other track, and record both into arrangement view. (I'm doing MIDI only.)
If I launch a clip, that records just fine in arrangement view. But I'm not able to play free lines (free = 'not in a clip') and have them ...

Re: How to record MIDI loops live
I seem to have found the answer here:
https://youtu.be/Zh-oGl00bnU?si=wMXMywIjwiHXGGB2
In Session view, start playback. Click the cell into which you want to record. To start recording, click ENTER. To end recording, click ENTER again. (Obviously ENTER can be assigned to a foot controller button.)

How to record MIDI loops live
I'm a capable keyboard player, and I want to record nothing but MIDI clips (no audio)) in a live/improv setting so I can loop them live.
The flow I'd like to accomplish is to select the clip/cell. (Of course the track is armed.) Then, with a foot control button (MIDI mapped to something) I'd start ...

Right. But what if you want to do the same thing, but with MIDI?

MIDI Effects | Looper no longer there?
I'm still a newbie to AL. I'm trying to figure out how to do looping with improvisation. A video using a previous version of Ableton says to use the Midi Effects | Looper. But I'm not seeing such a beast in AL 12.
Suggestions?
Thanks!

Re: Time for a new windows laptop for Ableton
I can understand not going the mac route
The time cost of learning/supporting yet another computer technology is to me a greater consideration than the dollar cost. I've tried using Macs--having literally grown up on Windows they are completely non-intuitive to me. (If I had grown up on Macs ...

Re: Time for a new windows laptop for Ableton
Core i7 2670M,
Near as I can tell the main difference between i5 & i7 is that i7 does hyperthreading. I'm doubting that (still 32bit--thus a bit behind the technology curve) Ableton Live supports hyperthreading.
I'm thinking i5 and use the money saved for more RAM or SSD or something else that ...

Time for a new windows laptop for Ableton
Obviously win7/64. Since Ableton is still 32bit I'm thinking 6 gigs of RAM is fine (a couple gigs for the OS--leaves 4 gigs for the 32bit RAM space). Type A USB ports so they can power other devices. Laptop will be dedicated to Ableton so all the extra software dookie they install will be ...

Re: stop recording with a footswitch
Ha, got it working. I reassigned the APC40 footswitch to scene launch and it's working. Maybe the default got fritzed. But it's working now.

Re: stop recording with a footswitch
I have an APC40!
I have selected a clip, and tried each footswitch in turn--nothing happens with the clip. (Momentary-on switches). I do see flashing on the MIDI activity light, however, so apparently something is happening.

But I don't want to stop all clips. Only the one I'm recording.
