In other words, I am asking: which monitoring setting will result in a MIDI recording that plays back as I heard it while I was performing it - just like a tape recorder! Simple question!
It's decribed at page 6 of this thread. I asked exactly that question.

I linked to exactly that thread. The issue is that that work around doesn't support all functions, like pan, select clip etc.

Ableton, plz release the automap CCs!!!

If you just release the CC numbers used by automap, we could all setup up our controllers ourselfs.

Even better, release a template for loading into the "old" (non-sl) remote, or 2 or 3 templates if that is what it takes to map every thing. It can't be that hard for someone who knows which CC does ...

Let users to make device-specific mapping, that are valid, when the device is selected in ADDITION to the global midi mappings.

+1

I would like to be able to save custum mappings - in a rack if necessary, we would just need more macro controls for that.

Also I would like to be ...

OK, I figured out this trick:

http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=47157&highlight=automap

Mind you, unlike what the howto states, the directory should not be made in 'User Defined Scripts' - which doesn't exist - but in 'User Remote Scripts'.

Now I need more 'encoders' that can be used ...

A thought: shouldn't it be possible to just use the Remote SL setting in Ableton, as long as the old "classic" just sends the same cc messages?

The only thing that would be lacking is the feedback on the LCD screen, as the classic does not have an extended one like the SL.

Now, who has a preset ...

Novation Remote "Classic" Automap?

This question is not about the Remote SL, but about the old "Novation Remote".

This one:

Is it possible to use automap with it?

I know it can't get feedback from Ableton, but it should be possible to have the knobs and sliders automapped ...

Yes, but how are you supposed to hear what you are playing if monitoring [on your midi track] is set to "off"?

well that is possible(and common) if I play a midi synth with local set to ON. (that means when the synth keys trigger the synth engine directly, meaning you do not have to loop midi ...

And how ridiculous is that?

Very.

I just did a test, set my soundcard's latency to its max value, and you are correct (it seemed unlikely to me), but in the 'auto' and the 'in' setting while you play, Live passes on the notes you hit on your keyboard to external synths with the soundcard's ...

I would like to add to that very true observation, and to make it even more complicated:

The monitored one, the one that is set to 'auto', recorded what you heard. If you used a softsynth.

But perhaps not if you used external gear.

That depends on whether 'auto' delays the midi notes while ...

With Ableton Live, midi data is passed through to external gear with the latency of the sound card added [?!?!] despite the midi data never having to pass through the soundcard. [/i]

If this is true, I think this could be core of the problem (sorry if it has been said before in this thread ...

Popslut, if you are correct and 'auto' does record what you hear, there is not much wrong with that.

You wouldn't want a tape recorder that moved the sound forward after it is taped, as 'off' apparently does. Now that would screw up the timing. or am I overlooking something?

But does 'auto ...

Murphf,
How do you manage to record using external modules when monitor is off?
I've to set it to auto otherwise no MIDI reaches my JV1010...

I arm two tracks, one set to 'off' and one to 'auto', and route the midi notes of the 'auto' track to my synth. I only record a clip to the 'off ...
