Er, OK. I'll reply to this myself, for the benefit of anyone else having the same problem
Managed to fix it last night. There is a seting on the mk449c that lets you send MIDI received on the USB port through to instruments connected to its MIDI port. Its called 'USB to MIDI' or something similar ...

I'm having problems getting rewire to work at all in Live. I have loked at the tutorial on this site, but my setup doesn't seem to match theirs at all. I cvan't even get started. Can anyone help?!
