I want to change the sampler instrument from my keyboard? is a program change message supposed to work?

I am sorry trouble people with this but im stuck.
Let me set the scene:
I want to record guitar loop on track 2 in ableton live (So both my hands are busy). I then need to drop out of record(without using my hands), and have the loop continue playing.
