depends if you want to get those classic korg sounds then stick with the mk
they excel at that, but if you want to go elsewhere then the micron will do you, you musn't be menu shy though, another thing to look at is the novation xio again not for classic sounds. and here's a little inspiration

I have an ION, its the micron's big brother.
If i could afford it i would get an Andromeda, but thats a whole nuva thread.
I can't say enough cool things about my ION, the micron is the same engine but with a couple extra
features and much fewer knobs. next up the ladder is the new Akai mini synth (Can't remember the name right now) same engine as the micron but with some more bits and bobs and a couple more knobs on it as well as pitch and mod wheels instead of the sliders on the micron.
If your on a PC there are a couple of very cool VST editors for the micron as well...

If you like Korg sounds, it might make sense to upgrade to a Korg R3. Radias synth engine and effects, distortion, full size keys, 8 voice polyphony, usb port, LEDs around knobs, LCD displays.

I'm partial to the korg sounds, haven't checked out the Alesis really.

What don't you like about the Microkorg? As was mentioned, the R3 has keys and a better interface, plus the sick sounds of the korg family.

ill say from my 20 minutes in the store with the micron im not a fan,

the R3 is a solid synth, just be ready to program from the editor, the menu diving is a little annoying to me

i have a radias that i picked up on ebay, love it, im very hands on, and all the knobs are a total plus

Not true, the miniAK is exactly the same synth as the micron. Only difference is the wheels instead of sliders and a top mounted mic input. Otherwise, they are identical. You can use the same patches, etc. I actually prefer the sliders and in my opinion the miniAK is also uglier!

On mac you have the micronAU too, great little plugin lets you program the micron on the computer.

I have the micron and am really happy with it - very flexible and powerful synth. Had a mk too and prefer the micron, not much the mk can do that the micron can't. I still don't use it as much as I use soft synths mind you.

Um..
almost..
The miniak has the same synth engin, but a much different OS that has more FX and a much better sequencer, arp and drum/step sequencer.
Your right, It can import and read MICRON patches through systex, but the micron can not read minak patches.

You sure about that? Over at the Ion/Micron/miniAK user group on yahoo this has been discussed at great length including people who have A/B tested them. The conclusion was they are the same, including the interface, the buttons (although in different orientation and given different names) and the effects. The step sequencer also appears to be identical. From glancing through the miniAK manual I have come to that conclusion myself too although never messed with one.
