Same trigger different sample?
Hey guys, I'm getting into triggering sounds with trigger pads. I was wondering if there was a way I could set up ableton so that I can cycle through different samples with one pad.
For example if I have 10 different samples of hi-hats, I want it so the first time I hit the pad I trigger sample 1, then the next time I hit it I trigger sample 2 and so on..
Is there any way I can do this?

I don't think you can do that without using an external application.
You can try doing that by creating a MaxMsp patch which I believe that can be done quite easily.

Ah, I don't have/have never used MAX.
There must be a way to do it in Ableton.... what would this sort of effect be called so I can do more research?

Re: Same trigger different sample?
search for 'round robin'
Re: Same trigger different sample?
it is possible but you need midi yoke bus on pc. i think you do not need anything extra on mac which has iac bus included by default. will be trying to recreate this on mac and my mpd18.

Would follow actions work for this? Set the trigger to a dummy clip with a follow action of "random" and zero quantization across the board. I don't have a copy of Live in front of me so I can't test this, and I think there might be an issue with the quantization settings for the clips, but it might be worth a look.
Re: Same trigger different sample?
not having my mpd around, but i recreated it on mac with iac (instead of midi yoke) and drumrack (instead of impulse. i also skipped scale effect as my default mpd template has sharp notes). works fine.

Ah cheers aeon_flux, that works perfectly!
Re: Same trigger different sample?
everyone is making this too complicated
put a random midi effect set to 100%, alt and add
set the number of choices to the number of samples you want to scroll through
hit the pad, it now scrolls through

So true, I totally forgot about the random function. But you can only scroll though 24 notes then it'll reset to the first note you've played.zalo wrote:everyone is making this too complicated

what if you don't want randomness and cycling pads in expected manner?zalo wrote:put a random midi effect set to 100%, alt and add

the alt function, instead of randomaeon_flux wrote:what if you don't want randomness and cycling pads in expected manner?zalo wrote:put a random midi effect set to 100%, alt and add
its that little button next to choices
Re: Same trigger different sample?
it make steps but for all input. key is to steping only one note so it still may require iac/midi yoke and mapping.zalo wrote: the alt function, instead of random
Re: Same trigger different sample?
The latin percussion kits are programmed like that ... so if you have a chance to check them out, you will see the principle.
They map the samples to 4 adjustant keys within a single key trigger drum rack and use a MIDI fx to cycle through them. very straight forward.
hope that helps

not if you put it inside of the drum rack, ill just upload an exampleaeon_flux wrote:it make steps but for all input. key is to steping only one note so it still may require iac/midi yoke and mapping.zalo wrote: the alt function, instead of random
