If I got it right, it seems like you want to have the workflow shown in the vid above made easier?
So in the end, it could work like this, right?

how got all that to be quotes of me anyways?SeanieBoi8 wrote:Yeah I use it the same way, when I have to put a vocal or instrument part down in Ableton. Its good at doing what it does the way it does it but it is very clunky and significantly slower compared to comping recorded tracks.
BUT Here Lies the main problemdavepermen wrote:The way I usually do vocals is I record the takes in session, then have 3 audio tracks going in arrange while I go through them - one has a parallel take (in time) that I can mute/unmute to hear each part to see which one's best, and another that is just like a holding track to put bits temporarily. Once I've chosen the bits I delete the 2 extra tracks. I guess proper comping might make this easier, but I've never had enough of a problem doing it in this way to look for alternatives - I find it really quick.
davepermen wrote:Once I've chosen the bits I delete the 2 extra tracks
No its not a problem ! just inefficient compared to comping, the way its currently done isn't comping it a clunky workaround compared to comping
but the problem comes when you want to quickly chose lines or phrases in the recorded takes and turn them into a single track. Especially when you want to mute a part in a take or audition a part of a take and not the entire take. But like I said If you haven't used comping then you wouldn't miss it but you workflow certainly will. And you tracks will take longer to arrange.
Sorry maybe I should have said workflow request. I know the automation needs to be "fixed" or rather improved, but there is actually no comping at the moment just a kind of workaround system in place.davepermen wrote: But while Live's automation is in the state it's in, I definitely don't think it should be the number 1 request

It's not really about playing keys or guit or anything perfectly every time.
It's about playing it perfectly once, and you don't need to be a virtuoso to do that.

Yeah especially if your playing dance synth lead riffs or RnB hip hop type piano lines only.AceLuby wrote:It's not really about playing keys or guit or anything perfectly every time.

I feel the same way about Ableton's try at comping 50% cool.davepermen wrote:while i hate apple style blabla ads, thanks for showing, now i 'got it'. still of about zero use for me, but nice anyways.
Like i said if ya haven't used it you don't know what your missing.
It like trying to explain why Ableton is better for quick inspired music creation
in so many ways, to someone who has never use it "Get it Got it Good"
When Ableton implements comping you'll understand then say How did i ever live without it?

If Ableton had COMPING then I would hardly ever use my current DAW anymore.
Now that would be cool - I could finish many projects 100% in Ableton.

you get that i normally never RECORD stuff? i create my music in ableton, that means, it's 99.999% midi. and then, i have 0 use for it. 0.. really.SeanieBoi8 wrote:Yeah the video is great I use Ableton like this for auditioning takesalex.the.forge wrote:How do you like my ventriloquism skills?

i understand how cool it is for recording some takes. but a lot of people don't do that ever, anymore. i totally get you, but you still don't get me, i guess? get me?
it is of zero use outside of recording and patch-working those recordings. i don't do that. if i record voices, then for feeding them into some vocoder or such, and there, warping allows me to fix any issues i could have (and else, maybe, record it twice.. omg that hard work).
it's completely not my business, nor do i ever plan it to be. one can do great music without ever touching any need of comping (not that my music is great, but it is music).

davepermen I do get you man I went to your site You have a Nice clean studio very pro looking. I listened to your tracks on the site and your music is good and clean I actually dig your vibe. Hope you don't mind me saying. I think if you put some live guitar and get a wicked singer you could have some hits. Music is all about collaboration. Just phone up some local singing teachers & guitar teachers and get them or one or two of their top students and release some tracks and do some live shows. Musos are always looking for ways to express themselves and you could and produce.
I'm an African Producer Based in South Africa I do a lot of traditional music and Kwaito music its similar
to American Hip Hop and the traditional stuff is similar to folk music. So I have to work with artists who speak different dialects and who sing and rap they also do English songs on their albums and English is not their first language so many takes are required. So maybe you can see why comping would be important to me or producers who produce tracks for fussy record companies. Traditional Producers always do multiple takes and comp in one way or another weather they be DR Dre 50cent Eminem etc or David Foster Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli. Its a pain I know we cant always work with artists of that caliber.
Also I use comping on midi all the time to audition different takes with different grooves & feels
And Abletons way of simply auditioning whole takes & stretching & warping them are good but
its still not comping in the same way that stretching isn't warping.
Answering below comment. I use melodyne but its no good for pronunciation or phonetics
or over all feel or groove but excellent for fixing its also an art I know!!!

Re: And the No1 Feature request is ? "You guessed it"
obviously. still, i think, in general, the need for comping for live per se is rather low. not that it wouldn't be nice (it certainly would), but it's a more live oriented thing (hence it's name
), and there, i see low usage. in a live situation, non-perfection is actually what people like, and you normally don't have time to do several takes while standing in front of a crowd.
still, it would be a nice feature. but not no1. at least not for most.
it would fit into your needs definitely, though
in the more digital studio world, a lot of people now use something like melodyne for this, a.k.a. let one sing horribly, and then correct it all manually till it's perfect. i call it cheating, other call it music business.

About every other name says "producer". Live performance often goes in hand with producing, which mean these either they are producers who produce music or they are live performers who also produce and record their or someone else's music.
I think it was best described on this forum when someone said that as a composition tool Live beats ProTools and Logic hands up. No matter what people think of the sound quality, I don't want to go into that, but Live is an inspirational tool to work with - also with production.
So even if Live leans towards live performance in its attitude, it doesn't mean it's any less used for music production. The approach to the music, interesting sound design tools and many unique approaches in the program functionality are what makes it so delicious to produce with. Everyone who writes a song with Live, produces music.
This is why I think they should make it faster and more efficient to use their live-performing tool for production.

sure. maybe looper 2.0 will get something like this? where you can record multiple takes and then select out which one plays how long where?
we'll see. else, max4live will come and help. it's our superhero for everything

Do not want. That's what the punch in/punch out is for, no? Or maybe just the CTRL+X CTRL+V functions?
