DJ Hero anyone. Now it's Musician Hero.

I always found Guitar Hero somewhat amusing. People pretending to be musicians. There is good out of it though as I have younger students who ask to learn songs (on a real guitar) which they'd heard on the game. But then along came DJ Hero. A game for people who want to pretend they're people who pretend they're musicians!

Technology should be used for the advancement of music both mentally and aurally, not the dumbing down until we're all just mashing buttons pretending we're actually playing something good.

/end rant. (with a hint of humour.)

the irony of the people taking the intellectual high road is amazing.

I avoided this thread, I too thought it was a Governator joke.

it's like an extension of the scale plug in, people have been doing this kind of note constraining for years, this is just automated across tracks with some new features. it's a fun trick, especially when playing with other people. I was in the same situation as he was once. a coworker uses Sonar, he wanted to show me his studio, GREAT musician on piano and guitar. we just sat down, I dropped in a scale plug in and we played for 45 minutes. I do not play keys, good times, no doubt.

it's a shame that he said the preset shouldn't be named after the scale's music theory name. there are the luddite musicians that whine about techshit. on the other hand his comment shows the techies running from music theory. do both, knowledge doesn't hurt.

I was wondering how max4Live could let you use [send] to multiple devices in a project. it'll be interesting to pull apart.

i play "real" music, and i'm not offended by any of these things. Everyone has a different skill set and/or gift. There are many days i wish i was an electrician and NOT a musician. Steady pay, regular work hours etc.

if people want to pretend, totally let them! Playing music can be and IS so much fun because of the SOUND that it creates, not the effort that went into it. It's an awesome experience and i hope more people get to enjoy it.

i think this is a totally fun and interesting tool. When a musician starts to care about the sound more than anything else, it doesn't matter how you get there, or what you do to get there. A musician completely based on a tool like this will probably be less "flexible" than one schooled, but if he/she is fast and smart enough to keep up, sure. Play the gig, have fun.

think about the harmonica.

Harp player: What key is it in?
guitar player: Cminor
Harp player: then i'll pick up my Cm harp. Thanks!
Guitar player: No prob. When do i get paid?

Anyway, this is too long to read by now. I try to have a positive attitude about things i don't like and see what i can learn from them. Like country music... and ELECTRONIC MUSIC!!! I used to hate it, but i forced myself to study it, and now all i want to do is buy synths and draw in 4/4 kick drum patterns. I will say, my rock music is better for it, as it's made me come to realization of the purpose of music in it's environment. As in, dance club music is designed to make people dance, coldplay is designed for people to sit and listen (and possibly cry out of sheer gayness :) etc

The fingerboard of a violin is smooth. Violinists must find the correct pitches via practice, muscle memory, hearing and micro-correction.

The fingerboard of a guitar has frets. This allows players to immediately find the correct notes.

I've never met a violinist who was offended by the invention of the guitar.

Well, I am a guitar player and I am offended by piano players, because most of them do not even know how to tune their instrument! :P

I would use that in the composition stage of a recording while at home but I'd feel like a total douche doing that live. Seriously, while it's a good and useful tool for those of us that don't play keys or aren't that advanced in our music theory/musicianship, if you perform a live show and just bash the keys resulting in proficient, jazz-quality comping, that's about as lame as it gets. I think "fraud" would be the word that would apply, at least if you're attempting to appear as though you're playing it. And I have no problem with twisting knobs over prearranged midi sequences live or even hitting "play" on a backing track if necessary. But this, when used in a live setting, is more akin to you jiggling your fingers over a guitar while your roadie does the actual playing from backstage. So, in sum, this is very cool if used properly.

FWIW, the guitar analogy doesn't work, because even with frets you can still play notes out of key.

Not at all. I like this, im using midi racks a lot. Just curious if there's something I missed out on, because I don't see why we need max to do this.

Id be more interested in micro tuning for instance. Stuff we cant do without max..

yes. no. maybe, what's the pay?

ever play with a Korg Karma? I think the Yamaha Motif is also similar. why so serious? it's a freebie. people are acting like a dog on its way to be neutered.

schwarzonator = midi Auto Tune

To me this seems like a practical device. I'd like to use it at a gig where you offer members of the audience a keyboard to jam along with the band. Make the experience interactive.

I'm more concerned about what will be left to add to the core Live programme now M4L is out there. For example, the schwarzonator is an extension of the 'Scale' amd 'Chord' plug-ins. Does this mean they wont be updated now because it could be seen as infringing on this guy's innovation?

And what would you enhance on the "scale" and "chord" plugins?
MacBook Pro 13" Retina i7 2.8 GHz OS 10.13, L10.0.1, M4L.
MacStudio M1Max 32Go OS 12.3.1

I'd combine them and make them like this schwarzonator M4L device.

But I guess Ableton wont do that now as part of the standard Live programme because it will be seen as ripping off schwarzonator.

My wider point, I guess, is what will Ableton add to Live now M4L is here? Because everything I've seen made with M4L so far are things that I would have hoped would have made it into Live as standard in the future. If those things wont make it in, what else will be added to Live?
