Dan and Marco Carola are like pin point on the mix perfect programming blah blah blah plus they rock the MUTHA FUCKIN HOUSE hands down

Donald isn't as technically tight as those 2 but is probably the undisputed show stopper hands down

I think a DJ is someone who can rock the party no matter what medium but have the tecnical presense to at least look like they now what their doing

Hey NO PEOPLE BASHING in this thread, I've been getting some wicked ideas and philisophies out of this thread, so yeah. Don't diss nobody.

I have been reaffirmed in my mind that there's more to DJ'ing well than just mixing tracks together. It's something you either have or don't have, and only so much of it comes from practice.

so wait a minute Im a DJ who has played guitar, bass, and drums for 15 years but I dont use them to dj. What am I "Big DOG" I DJ with some of my own tracks I make edits of other tracks that I DJ so am I a musician or a DJ? Ild say Im a DJ and Im proud of it . jsut because you can open your tiny little mind to others art doesnt give you the right to judge them .
And as for Dj's being the reason for rock music sucking ass right now {WTF is that all about }how is that a DJs fault.

please don't pay attention mr. bigdog, he's just trying to derail the conversation, this thread has some very good insights, especialy the guy who brought up the fact that before laptops people using desktops weren't calling themselves djs on stage,,, that was an eye opener I for one had overlooked. no one is questioning musicianship or art here, the original poster was just questioning what makes a dj i think

What is a DJ?

IMO Pretty much anyone can take the claim to the title DJ an its so easy to qualify. Its the most over used title around an doesnt require a skill or background of knowledge. If you can hit play or drop a needle you are automatically a DJ. You can even fake mix and scratch to a prefabricated mix with some good acting an not many will catch you perpetrating a fraud. Just slap a DJ tag on yourself an everyone will believe you. Now being a good or bad DJ is whole different issue. Still anyone can be a DJ either way.

I think that this is because very early on, when dj'ing started out on the streets of america (hip hop etc) people were making do with whatever tools were at their disposal in order to express themselves. Back then the average joe had a record player, now that common tool is becoming the laptop.

As a result, the new generation are using todays tool (the laptop/notbook) exactly in the same paradigm of yesteryear. Interesting to think that in some ways the pinnacle of hip hop DJ'ing was near the time of its origin, maybe we are approaching the pinnacle of laptop DJing too.

However the incredible technical skill that some few people do posess in turntablism 20 or so years after its incarnation makes me wonder just how crazy things will be in another 20 years time. But the discussion is not about the future as much as it is about the now.

Here is my input into this whole arguement.

I am apart of a 2 man DJ-PA Team. I have been doing this hybrid thing for about 10 years and I think that we have done somthing unique. DJ's im my mind down to what the word means are pretty lame. DJ's who play their own music are okay. But me and my bud have come up with a new hybrid way. Why can't we take the excitement of performing live "via Keyboards. Yes, I do play piano" and incorporate that into DJing? Let me elaborate.

Me and Mike play the keyboards and I work an Evolution controller. We have it all going into Live and have a rack mount setup. But the DJing part is that we have a modded TR-909 synced to midi and is controlled with a pattern step sequencer mounted to my keyboard. And I have other parts like other synth parts that we could not play being spun in Live.

Its this hybrid way that makes the DJ look a quite bit more like he is interacting with the music. Its pretty much performing and DJing at once.

I hope that more DJ wannabee's will take this into consideration and learn to play a fucking instrument and then add that to their DJing talents.

Thats my word.
